Sexy Girl

The Piano Sonata No. 13 in E-flat major "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 1, was completed in 1801 (age 31).

We don't know for sure why Beethoven used the title, "Quasi una fantasia." But, here are some thoughts: the entire sonata is played continuously without pauses between movements. The movements are not in the "usual" order for a sonata: the opening movement is a slow movement, the scherzo and "anticipated" slow movements are in inverted order, and the first movement is not in sonata form. Finally, there is a quotation from one movement within another (here, from the third movement within the fourth). And this is a form of freedom not ordinarily employed in typical classical sonatas.

The piece has four movements:
1. Andante – Allegro – Andante (ABA); in E-flat major.
2. Allegro molto e vivace in C minor.
3. Adagio con espressione in A-flat major.
4. Allegro vivace in E-flat major

Snowdrops

I was deeply saddened by the passing of Keith Emerson. It has been a very difficult few months. We’ve lost several giants. This is a very short but potent homage I wrote for Keith several years ago. I am so sorry that I never got to share it with him. He was a giant as a pianist, organist and synthesist. His playing was outstanding and he gave us so much great music for nearly fifty years.

This delightful musical/spiritual collaboration unfolded so naturally, organically, and with such ease; the fruit of our mutual appreciation of each other's music over several years on SoundCloud.  In-deed, it was something magical that couldn't and wouldn't be rushed. :)  
So...
When my dear Norwegian friend and vocalist Oddrun Eikli   https://soundcloud.com/oddrun-eikli  let me know that she was really taken with my piano piece `Hymn To The Heavens'  @  https://soundcloud.com/gary-courtland-miles/hymns-to-the-heavens  I jumped at the chance to engage with her and sent the piano track immediately. 😁 Thankfully, she replied that as she had a special feeling for it, that she would love to try. And OMG, did she ever!  The result is a 50/50 collaboration that many listeners have described as 'Stunning'. I agree whole-heartedly.

Several months later, Oddrun wrote again, this time enclosing her Vocal tracks and a rough mix of how it sounded to her as a whole. Needless to say, she totally `blew me away`with the depth and beauty of her creative contribution.  I am still in awe of what she did. Here's what she said about the experience.  

    " I sing from the heart. 
       I have sung again and again until I found my way with the music. 
       It is a meditation, it is gratitude to what was, what is, and what is to come.
       I am so grateful for this journey in your music. 
       It has enriched my life. 
       With your wonderful music and this journey, I feel such joy and  
       tranquillity. W we will be best friends forever.

But learning to play, and continuing to do so just a few years ago.    And though I will never be in that distinctive class I try and learn and learn... With great pleasure and excitement I want to invite you to this magical journey into the world of "Abracadabra!". This album took us a whole year to compose and record - from August 2019 to August 2020. When we were close to finishing it up, we faced this difficult choice - what track to select for making a music video. It was a challenge! This whole album was composed as a cinematic adventure, so, basically, any track from it can be turned into the music video. We ended up asking all the participating musicians for their favorite tracks. It was quite symbolic that "Time" - the opening track - won the majority of the votes. This music video is the result of few months of scouting for locations, shaping the costume, makeup and accessories, filming and editing. We all hope you will enjoy it.

I want to thank again everyone who was a part of this project: 
- Phil DiMercurio (aka PdubJamz) for his drums and percussion truly transformed the album.
- Yamaha Artist Yoed Nir for the wondrous cello.
- Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Alexa Ray for the amazing vocals.
- Producer of several Grammy-nominated artists, Matthew Shell, who supervised mixing & mastering of "Abracadabra!", Erik Fredriksen for mixing and Steven Vagovics for mastering.
- Anastasia Frenkel for drawing such amazing artworks for each track! Vibrant, mystical, haunting, surreal - just like we envisioned this album to be. 

And, of course, I'd like to thank my husband who was behind the whole production of the album and the upcoming music video.

For the 31st Solar Kama Sutra song I decided to challenge myself a bit and do something in 7/4 time.  I tried remembering a band I heard do that and thought, "Isn't Pink Floyd's "Money" in 7/4 time?"  I remembered hearing it and thinking it was...

...  Turns out it is!  So for that reason I thought of Pink Floyd, and tried to do a Pink Floydish sound.    It's also a nod to Radiohead's "Pyramid Song".  I tried to capture the same feeling that song gives me, but with Solar Kama Sutra this time. 
(by the way, Solar Kama Sutra has always been just one person.  It's just the name for what I call the music)

Since Radiohead already used "Pyramid" which is well-known since ancient Egypt to be the coolest shape, I had to go with something else.  "Sphere Song" and "Cube Song" ?...  Well...  Those song titles just aren't gonna work....   Maybe "Dodecahedron Song"?....  Hmm... That actually sounds pretty catchy...  Feel free to use it!  

 My vocals are used more heavily on this track than it seems.  Throughout the track I tried to make my vocals sound like guitars and other instruments

  And definitely hats off to Pink Floyd for making a hit song in a 7/4 time signature.   How many times has that been done before?!

And of course, hats off to Stonehenge.  The ultimate inspiration for this track

We in Europe have been following this election closely, and in many ways it struck us as surreal.

The free world still needs a strong America to contain the nations that are moving away from an indispensable area of democracy and freedom. The environmental state of the planet cannot afford to wait.
The essential stake which must unite us all lies in the safeguard of our beautiful blue planet.

Unrequited Love

I have a lot of faith that people can be strong enough to recognize where they have done (or are doing) harm and make sincere amends. I also believe that people have the power to heal and forgive wrong doings. It takes great strength to walk together through the fire of our pains and come out the other end holding hands, recognizing and honoring our differences while acknowledging and celebrating our similarities.  

May everyone get a chance to break bread together, enjoy some wine, and share some laughs. 

Thanks again to Calebass, Jon, and Janine for joining me together on a 3rd track. We make a great team! It was really fantastic to have Chris O and Belial Pelegrim finally join a track on my page. Chris O and Belial are two SoundCloud legends in my opinion. I am so grateful to be making music with all my favorite people. If only I had more time to make music with all of my favorites on the cloud. Who knows, maybe I do!
