"When this project began I instantly knew I wanted to involve Pablo. Andrew Lojero connected us and we linked like old friends. Pablo's vault of unreleased and unfinished songs is vast, several tunes were at one time set to be pressed on wax for this project but it wasn’t until the 11th hour, on a visit to Ras_G’s SpaceBase that we decided on “Disappear Without A Trace.” 

I took Pablo over to SpaceBase to meet and build with _G after “Yumshit” was already locked in. _G went through some of The ASP’s latest cuts as we went through some backwoods. Eventually  _G passed the auxiliary cable to Pablo, who humbly pulled out his third generation iPod and started going through some sketches. After he was through, I remembered I had some of his music in my phone. I plugged in and started playing my pablo playlist. When the demo version of “Disappear Without A Trace” came on _G started nodding along. As the track faded out, _G looked over from his green chair, unrolled backwood leaf in hand and in a low baritone said, “seven inch?” 

Pablo and I looked at each other and it was like we had the exact same thought at the exact same moment."

Did you know Singapore's best kept secret goes by the name of TAJ? Tim de Cotta (bass/vocals), Audrey Tengkey (piano, keys and synth) and Teo Jia Rong (drums) form the exciting contemporary Jazz trio TAJ.

Their forthcoming "The Astral Journey" EP will be released with local independent record label, Darker Than Wax. It's a cross pollination of beats, psychedelia, post-rock, breaks and everything it takes to please the discerning ears of contemporary Jazz fans.

We gratefully premiere the title track, which is by far the most organic piece of music on the EP. If you like Robert Glasper, you need to feast your ears on this fasho!

The EP comes out January 30th and includes remixes from Dutch producer Jaël and Cosa Nostra from Singapore.

ReELab is only a kind of personal workshop to improve my abilities as producer, musician and composer (applying jazz and harmony studies as well as the techniques I use on my DAW to produce music)
Jazz players always studied with standards to improve their skills.
I'd like to work with contemporary tracks I love as well.
Maybe that old standards (like 'Autumn Leaves', 'All The Things You Are', 'Tenderly'.. ) no longer belong to our culture .. or, anyway, we can use both.

- play the vocal line with an instrument
- not working on it too many hours
- play all by myself
- do something I've never done before
- use one or more new techniques, plug-ins .. (I used a new wurlitzer plug-in that my friend mick sent me yesterday!)
- play one solo in a jazz mood

Wax Poetics Presents "Tawk Takeout: Tawk Tomahawk Remixed" by Melbourne, Australia soul group Hiatus Kaiyote.


When Queen of Just About Everything, Ms. Erykah Badu, delivers knowledge, you open yourself to receive. Which is why when she devoted 140 characters or less to Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote—her exact words were "Okay. I'm done. In love,"—it confirmed our strong sense that these guys were exceptionally special.

In a country where balls-to-the-floor AC/DC rock boasts a much fuller history than soulfully futuristic stylings, this seven-piece from the east coast city of Melbourne is an anomaly. Hiatus Kaiyote’s uniqueness comes not only from their surroundings, but also their capacity for a sound rich in its understanding of soul, R&amp;B, and jazz.

Lead singer/songwriter Nai Palm was raised on the sincerity of artists like Wonder and Franklin, which she funnels into one of the most naturally arresting voices we’ve heard (check this <a href="http://youtu.be/FwLU_PXheuo" target="_blank">cover of "My Cherie Amor"</a> from her NYC debut over the weekend). Her current U.S. trip as ambassador for the band has gained Hiatus Kaiyote a luminary list of new fans and friends including the Roots, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Jean Grae, Pharoahe Monch, the Brainfeeder crew, and more.

Word of Hiatus Kaiyote has found its way to the U.K. as well. Right now the band is enjoying the attention of Gilles Peterson, who selected their self-released EP Tawk Tomahawk as his Album of the Week. The timing has worked well for us too, as Wax Poetics cordially presents the accompanying remix album, Tawk Takeout.

Twelve producers tackle Hiatus Kaiyote originals, grappling with the stems and unfolding them into various forms. Mark de Clive-Lowe contributes a wonderfully spirited version of "Malika," which sits beside interpretations by Shafiq Husayn, KCRW’s Anthony Valadez, and more.
