Our couch was at the curbside, our broken TV too,
With a pile of stuff from momma's room folks were pickin' through.
Landlord notice on the door, said “PAYMENT OVERDUE”,
The day we left our house on Second Avenue.

Mama said, “Just pack your suitcase, leave your toys out by the street,
I'll buy you some new ones, when I get back on my feet”.
I was tryin' not to cry, but the neighbor kids all knew,
The day we left our house on Second Avenue.

Life was always stacked against us but mamma always found a way, 
She tried her best to ease the shame and pain I felt that day.
She said, “son, hold your head up high no matter what they think of you”,
And we walked out of the house on Second Avenue.

Back in town for mamma's funeral, I drove my son around,
Pulled into a side-street, slowed the motor down,
He asked “daddy why you cryin'?”, and a tear fell right on cue,
As we slowly passed to the house on Second Avenue.

I'm excited to share my first song with live recorded violins and cello, thanks to the extremely talented duo at String Fever Studio.  

"The Music Box & Other Stories" is a poignant nod to my childhood and my mother's music box, which played "Waves of the Danube," and which I found completely mesmerizing.  That was my first realization that every song had a story to tell, and instilled a longing in me to tell my own musical tales.

Something To Remember (Op.7 No.10)

Another collab with my student Sophie. I am playing piano and she added cello and birds. It's great to be able to do recordings with her, so she can hear what she is playing. It is wonderful encouragement when she can read comments people have left for her on other music. For me, hearing her music grow sometimes I can't tell if she is playing or if it is me. We have been working on expression. Anyone can learn how to read music and play the right notes at the right time with their hands, but learning how to feel music with your body is different. So many adults took piano lessons when they were young and stopped playing and don't have the confidence anymore . If they had a way to hear themselves now maybe they would be encouraged to play again, otherwise it is a complete loss. Today most public schools have shut down creative studies. Children aren't exposed to music like they used to, not since George Bush changed education and made it all about testing testing testing and teachers couldn't teach the way they had been used to. Now its getting much worse. Children need to learn to be creative. It gives me great pleasure to teach them (and adults too!)
