Sometimes it’s not enough to pick out the right chords, to write out the melody, sprinkle the notes. Sometimes it’s not enough to play the right instruments, hire the orchestra, space out the mics. Take a listen to some “fake Spotify artists” and you’ll know that it’s true. It seems that these copycats have all the ingredients, but the dish still tastes lukewarm. That is because their course is lacking the true soul of a master which they’ve poured into each piece. That’s the ingredient not listed on the recipe. Now take a listen to this gorgeous track by a composer and visual art collective from LA named Sanctuary. It seems, oh, so simple, straightforward, and plain, and yet, when you play it, it beams with emotion, dynamically charged and expanded within. It’s ripe with that ‘something’ that Jóhann possessed – and that is the best compliment I can give to any new recommendation. “Crystalline, emotional orchestral and choral elements blend with intriguing foley. Sometimes intimate, sometimes epic, Sanctuary caresses dark themes with intense visual vignettes and haunting, widescreen music, challenging the audience to join them on an inward journey.” Released on Safari Riot, the collective offers up a debut of two EPs, both volumes out tomorrow, December 3rd. This is incredibly beautiful and cinematic, and I can’t wait for you to enjoy the rest of the pieces. But for now, here’s my favorite, titled “In Absolute.”

"In my mind ‘In Absolute’ is a very visual piece. Much like a close-up shot in a film, slowly zooming out to reveal an intricate scene, ‘In Absolute’ embodies the same feeling. A simple idea ever-expanding. It would not have been possible without the brilliant string and woodwind ensembles we recorded in Iceland last summer."

“A Place For Every Piece” was written in 2021. It is about a cabin I have been visiting over a decade now. Growing up and all of the memories that are with me still today. Every time I go there everything is always in the exact spot I remembered it. My grandmothers organ, blankets draped over the couch, Two chairs on top of the rocks outside. This track is very nostalgic to me. The melody towards the end of the song was originally written on that organ and later transcribed to guitar. This is the first song from my new EP which is set to release 5/6/22

It has been an incredible journey to get this far and we never could have reached it without the kind support of talented artists and all the wonderful people who have ever bought one of our releases or attended one of our shows.

In this modern digital age with its constant stream of information, we've sought to work as quietly as possible, firmly rooting our ethos that things can be released in a subtle, quiet way. To celebrate this great landmark for us, we will be releasing our 5th year compilation 'Elements'. All profits from Elements Three (火) will be donated to ecoACTIVE which is an innovative environmental education charity with a reputation for using hands-on, practical and fun approaches to explore complex issues of sustainability.

Tiny Leaves - Notes on Belonging was released in 2017 and has now been reworked by a host of artists. The album, an exploration of landscapes was inspired by the Welsh term 'Cynefin'. When translated it means the environment in which you live, to which you are naturally acclimatised.
The beautiful vocals and talents of Julianna Barwick rework 'Cynefin'. An uplifting melancholia results alongside crafted sounds that envelop and delve deep into the soul, setting the tone as the first single of the highly anticipated Notes on Belonging rework album.
Other artists on the forthcoming rework album include Haiku Salut, Oscuro, Billion One and Ink Project

"Footsteps" is a meditation on stillness, peace and calm, for piano and extended violin techniques. Inspired by Debussy's Piano Prelude 'Footsteps in the Snow' the track never rises above a whisper.

The title DeeDee is a clue to the approach behind it’s creation and the whole track is a larger hint for what’s in store on the EP. D and E are the pitches around which the track is built, but these notes are also taken from an earlier release and this is the theme of the track and the EP. It is all made from bits and pieces of Leah’s previous releases that have been reconstituted and repurposed to create new music (A copyright lawyers nightmare). The single also has birds as a theme at it’s heart which is evident from the video for DeeDee which breaks up flocks and murmurations of birds into patterns which mesmerise and at times resemble Rorschach tests.

DeeDee is out on 11th Feb with the full EP 'Bird Rib' out on 19th March.
