Robert Charlebois’ musical world is an incredible source of treasures, in several genres, throughout the course of a career that has reached the half-century mark. Any good vinyl hunter on the planet knows the value and importance of Charlebois. His name is circulating among record collectors, and his music jumps from generation to generation, country to country, in the most natural way. Let us state the obvious: the raw energy found in his music has not been altered in the slightest by the passage of time.

Music lovers under 40 have discovered Charlebois by going through their parents’ vinyl collections. Used LPs, scratched and dusty, holding true gems that begged to come out and play. Back then, Charlebois was bringing a new sound to Quebec, an evolution, but he also introduced a look, an influential style.

Until now, Robert Charlebois’ oeuvre had never been the subject of a rereading/remixing project. This year, his 50th anniversary in show business, provided a good opportunity to invite a new generation of musicians to dig deeper into the grooves Charlebois has laid down. Though the techniques and instruments used to write and treat music have changed, the goal remains the same: to surprise, to develop new ideas, to push back the limits of form and content, to broaden the sound spectrum.

The idea of a remix album came from Montreal-based musician/producer/artistic director/DJ Poirier. The project eventually got set in motion, and Poirier took its helm as artistic director and executive producer. He also applied his magic to a handful of tracks. The concept was to sample Charlebois’ songs directly, without access to their individual tracks – to draw from the raw material and go straight to the heart of the matter. The results: fat dirty funk, round beats, and psychedelic flights seen under a new light. The sunnier side of Charlebois’ music is also represented along the way through nods to Latin, reggae, and calypso music.

Nhar kicks starts 2015 with a follow up to his critically acclaimed ‘Life’s Ether’ EP, released early this year on My Favorite Robot Records French DJ and producer Nhar has been a stalwart of the underground House and Techno scenes for the last decade, releasing music with respected imprints such as Mobilee, Correspondent and Boxer. The opening months of 2014 saw him team up for the first time with the ever excellent Canadian label My Favorite Robot Records for the superb ‘Life’s Ether’, a record that garnered support from the likes of Steve Bug, Danny Howells, Estroe and Justin Robertson to names but a few. Now the highly respected producer is back with a standout follow up entitled ‘In Spaces Between’ based around 3 interconnected compositions. The package opens with ‘Part 1’ , a warm and
hypnotic slice of electronic music that draws on warbling pads, haunting spoken word vocal and bubbling acid undertones, all underpinned with a perfect rhythm track. “Part 1’ gives ways to ‘Part 2’, which sees a shift into Chicago inspired territory with it’s old school stabs and taut drums. Spoken word vocals once again set the atmospheric scene before the bassline picks up a blissful melodic pattern and drives the track forward into spine tingling territory with it’s ethereal pads and subtle acidic squelch, quality stuff. Finally we have ‘Part 3’: the tempo drops, the acid breaks free and the listener is taken on a journey down the rabbit hole with this delightful mid tempo and musical workout. This is another impressive release from Nhar and another fine addition to the ever expanding and critically acclaimed MFRR catalogue.

Now, with Subfield, Mugwump's own label and his rather fine Leftorium clubs he's solidifying this diversity. What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

I'm not too excited by the prospective of 'recording' a mix but starting a varied 8 hours set in the morning at Panoramabar would have me in a great mood I reckon. I love that club, played there a few times for Playhouse & Kompakt, partied there every single time after I DJ'd in Berlin... It totally reminds me of the freedom we had in the Boccaccio with its ultra late closing on Monday evenings. Also last year I played in the garden of a Sao Paulo museum for around 3000 people, the setting was nuts...

Born into a family of musicians, it came of no surprise to see a young Florian Rietze lay the platform of what would later manifest into an unyielding love for music. Based in Potsdam, this young producer & DJ has already received recognition from many within the proliferating European electronic music scene. Having initially been vested to the hip hop and breakdance culture, 2005 saw Florian take his first steps towards the electronic music scene when he attended SonneMondSterne. Florian is on the allegiant quest of refining the sound of his music. dOP, the group of wandering minstrels that embody the very essence of Circus Company, have returned home with new tales to impart from their travels away. Indeed the insatiable touring appetite of this trio of mariachis finds them often afar at sea, spreading their message and encountering strangers in strange lands.
As such, the first side of this new EP bears the fruit of a sizzling barbeque and a raucous karaoke session held in the distant shores of San Francisco, home to a talented gang of artists known as PillowTalk. Consumating their initial meeting in a studio back in Berlin, the synth-pop meets deep house of “Your Feellin” marks a move into new ground for both groups.
But of course the way of the traveller is not always grilled meat and bad cover versions. There are times when even the hardiest of messengers will feel the need to reflect on their situation. Once again Damien, Clement and Jaw have confounded our expectations with ideas and imagination that can only come from the well-travelled of this world. Break New Soil is thrilled to present Gregor Tresher´s brand new full length artist album "Nightcolors", marking the next chapter in a series of releases and remixes that have underlined his status as one of the most prolific and influential artists in electronic music today.

After a string of chart-topping EP’s on Cocoon, Drumcode and Music Man earlier this year and two high profile remixes this spring (Depeche Mode - Soothe My Soul, Moby - The Lonely Night), Gregor went back into the studio to craft his latest offering for his very own label, Break New Soil. 

The new album embodies the signature Tresher-sound from peak hour, techno-driven dance floor bangers („Permafrost“, „Black Relief“) over darker electronica tracks that mark a connection to his earlier Sniper Mode works („Pelican Dreaming“, „Apparition“), to lush and cerebral soundscapes that shape the album into a complete listening experience - and of course there are the signature sounding melodic tracks that Gregor´s name has become a trademark for („Nightcolors“ and his latest Cocoon hitsingle „About A Good Place“).

Accompanying the release, Gregor embarks on an extensive album tour that will include a mixture of exclusive live performances as well as DJ gigs starting at the end of May at Movement Detroit (US). The tour will touch down on some of the most prolific music festivals in the world such as Love Family Park (DE), Exit Festival (RS), Sonar (ES), Loveland (NL), SonneMondSterne (DE), Barrakud Festival (HR), and will culminate at ADE in Amsterdam at the annual Break New Soil Label Showcase in October. There will be a select group of clubs featured on the tour such as Berghain (Berlin), Fabric (London), Studio 80 (Amsterdam), Output (New York), Sankeys (Ibiza), Sound (Los Angeles) and Warung (Brazil) amongst others.  

Gregor Tresher began his career as a DJ in Frankfurt in the early '90s; today, he can be found plying that trade at venues around the world, from Berlin to Tokyo, Sydney to Los Angeles. In addition to releasing tracks on countless esteemed labels including Cocoon, Music Man, Drumcode, Ovum, Intacto, Moon Harbour and of course his very own Break New Soil, Gregor´s remix history includes artists like Depeche Mode, Sven Väth, Moby, Extrawelt and many more.
