The History of Climate Change with Professor Sam White

Prof. John R. McNeill (Georgetown University, Washington) hat am 19.02.2016 in der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung einen beeindruckenden Vortrag über die Umweltgeschichte der Industrialisierung gehalten. Genauso interessant war aber auch die von Prof. Franz-Josef Brüggemeier (Universität Freiburg) eingeleitete Diskussion der von John McNeill aufgeworfenen Fragen.

Gegenstand des Vortrags war nicht die Industrielle Revolution selbst, also das Zusammenspiel der technischen Entwicklungen bei der Garn- und Stofferzeugung, der Verbrauch von Kohle, der Eisen- und Stahloutput oder die Entwicklung des Eisenbahnwesens, sondern die Ökologie der Industriellen Revolution. Dieser Wechsel im Fokus der Betrachtung führte weg von England als dem Mutterland der Industriellen Revolution zu den weltweiten Folgen der Industrialisierung, die  ihren je spezifischen Ort hatten. Insofern vereint McNeills Zugriff Aspekte von Globalisierung und Regionalisierung.
