Noisia & Phace - Levitation [VSN005] (2008)

Drum & bass stalwarts Black Sun Empire are to follow up a trio of recent EPs from The Upbeats, Neonlight and Pythius with the release of ‘Until The World Ends’ - a five-track, collaborative EP with NZ duo State Of Mind. To be released on January 26th via their genre-defining Blackout imprint, it marks an exciting start to 2015.

Lead track ‘Ego’ immediately sets the tone with growling bass lines and punchy synth-stabs that underpin dark, techy atmospherics and vocal loops.

Second track ‘Until The World Ends’ proves once again both acts’ enduring versatility - kicking off with a bass-heavy dubstep tones complimented by vocal duties from State Of Mind’s fellow New Zealander PNC, before

switching to a manic, intelligently structured groove for the remainder.

‘Bad’ opens with progressive percussion and softly-worked synths that move euphorically to a pounding drum break, whilst fourth track ‘Jack Nicholson’, featuring an imitable sample of the man himself, is a bass-fuelled shockwave of a track. Final track.

‘Moonbox’ closes the EP in true Blackout fashion, with signature frenetic beats and firing drums rounding off proceedings in style.

Black Sun Empire have built a reputation for curating their own brand of dark, neurofunk-inspired drum & bass over the past 12 months and this collaboration with long term accomplices State Of Mind - whom released their latest album ‘Eat The Rich’ via the label earlier this year - feeds into the hype surrounding Blackout as the label looks ahead to 2015.

More amazing international neurofunk from the Close2Death camp. The Gloucester, UK-based label have been carving a path through drum & bass over the past few years, establishing a name and an identity by only dealing in the very best sounds from the edges of reality. On C2D015 they present two mighty slices of future music, from Russia and from France.

After releases on You So Fat and Ammunition with Kaibre, Russia’s Effector returns with The Destroyed Kingdom, this time around in the capable hands of Neonlight. From its sleek, shimmering intro, filled with electronic pulses and rising, angelic backing, the remix takes you far and wide, from this world to others. The track lifts slowly, but soon establishes its meaning, which is all-out neuro destruction. Neonlight marks his own territory on the track, lending it an edge as only he can do. This is one unholy banger, full of energy and life. The remixer takes the track into new areas, but never loses sight of the original’s soul and purpose. Get ready.

The flip, meanwhile, comes from French electronic producer Landscapers, who delivers Chords From Woods. Mixing drum & bass and ambient in his sound, Louis Pertuy has achieved something definitely unique. Chords From Woods establishes itself early on, with a sharp and dynamic melody rising out of the intro. To this the producer adds kicks and the rumble of a bassline.

The track pitches up, as the drums roll on. Crazy synths come in after the drop, with Landscapers happy to alternate between the electronic, glitchy elements and more straight-ahead drum & bass ideas throughout the track. Different, divergent and utterly addictive, Chords From Woods shows just how much Close2Death are pushing things forward as we look to 2015.

Elevated far above the streets in one of the towering high-rise buildings that dominated the urban heart, the sound of the high-octane pursuit below barely penetrated the bleak musty cubical. Its cigarette-stained walls are etched with the marks he’d made to signify the passing of his life in this space. The ever-present hum of building’s servers that once he’d thought faintly pleasant, oppressively penetrated his eardrums - continually evolving… scraping the inside of his brain like sonic sandpaper. Flickering lights from the city’s exterior advertisements strobed across the dark sea of cubicles, the huddled occupants of each fixated on the faint glow of their viewscreens, their enslaved minds pouring over the flow of a sea of meaningless data. The lights hurt his eyes these days, each wave illuminating his dank space peaked his migraine – like shards of glass penetrating deep into the roots of his skull and twisting within his cortex on the way. He was at the edge, hovering on the very horizon of sanity itself… the boundary blurring – what was more insane – this existence? Or the one he desired – to tear himself free from the bonds of this reality… for his heart to burn with the light of a thousand stars as he steered his body towards the purity of presence outside of this slavery… to defy the great architect and stand proud just for a moment… Just as this thought manifested, he felt the tight grip upon his shoulder - briskly pulling him around to see the corrupt, fat, distorted face of the overseer sneering down through that twisted crevice of a mouth. Those chains broke – he felt his hand grasping the keyboard that he had been so long manacled to in his mind, moving with the rotation of the chair as he rose swiftly with the roar that escaped him so fluidly. The overseer’s shocked expression froze in time as the keyboard collided with his mouth – landing with such brutal force that the shockwave passed through his fat face. With that roar, he felt free… he had found himself.
 
SEGMENT & CONCEPT VISION follow up their incredible MAMMOTH EP with their 2nd impressive outing on neurofunk’s leading label, EATBRAIN. Proving once more the exceptional skill of their combined production with the 5 heavy-duty tracks of the ROAR EP (including free release with the vocal-led ‘EMPIRE’), the pair set the bar high through their powerful sound. Whether it’s the stuttering might of title track ROAR with its nightmare fueled arpeggios, or the dub-influenced sci-fi majesty of THIRST (featuring COD3X) - each track proves more relentless than the last. This is tear-out neurofunk at its best, proving once again the strength of the EATBRAIN sound and cementing another incredible pair of Russian producers within the roster.

One year on from the launch of their inaugural “Rotation” programme, Addictive Behaviour’s various-artist shuttle orbits earth once more. On board this time, a crew of 21 intrepid pioneers, bringing with them a diverse spectrum of musicality and D&B engineering expertise to the quest. Armed, locked and loaded with an assault of sophisticated phonic weaponry, their mission is simple. Audio annihilation!

This 2nd chapter to Addictive Behaviour’s dynamic album series is their most ambitious project to date. An otherworldly journey showcasing an edgy and explosive array of raw talent from a collective of old and new artists from the Addictive camp. Embarking on this Rotation, and making their label debut is an impressive ensemble of well-known names as well as fresh up and coming, cutting edge producers. Nick Bee rains in the darker, techy vibes with his “Ghetto Politics”, as do Kyrist & Babarix in their obliterating “Maikuro Funk” collab. Meanwhile, Release, Tephra & Arkoze, Data 3 & Modu provide their own unique variations, beaming with moody subs and percussive vibes, encapsulating the Addictive Behaviour tone to great effect. Philth adds a fresh, melodic, vocal composition to the deep end of the mix in “The Big Question” whilst Dom & Roland’s Xanadu is commissioned for remixing duties delivering an explosive new take on Detail’s “Breakout”.

Talking of which, joining the new recruits on this expedition, long term label regulars Detail & L 33 step into the fray, flexing their elements of neuro-tech styles and adding momentum to this growing satellite of revolving music production. Also on board this charter, some recent Addictive additions. Mystic State’s “Eye Contact” and Nami’s “Downpour” push the audio transit on with their bass fuelled roller’s rocketing us in to unknown territory.

Finally, kicking in the afterburn, are the Rotation – Part One veterans. Artifact returns with another relentless aural display in “Materialist” whilst Fade brings a heavy metallic attack in “Hold Tight” Finishing off the universal carnage TR Tactics are joined by relative label newcomers The Clamps to bring us a full on neuro assault in “Conscious”.

Rotation –Part Two will be making it’s re-entry in to Earth’s atmosphere on September the 30th. The 14 track LP is an awe-inspiring amalgamation of complex layered productions showing us once again the label’s ability to evolve. An immersive and varied, frontier pushing display with one unifying theme echoing from its core once again. . . Good quality production.

KINETIK' A great introduction to Juno’s unique style. This track starts off with cinematic percussion and sinister atmospheres. Once the scene is set the track seems to endlessly pitch up and elements of the bass creep in. As the tension builds and the kick drums pound, a vocoded hip-hop style vocal indicates the devastation ahead! The drop is so heavy!
