Anyone who has been following the music industry the past few years knows this fact: Vinyl sales are up! And up big! In fact, sales of vinyl in 2016 reached a 25-year high as consumers young and old have found new satisfaction from embracing physical formats of music.

However, this recent trend did not happen out of thin air. Independent labels, like Helsinki imprint Common Labour, have been the influencers behind the scenes making the shift happen by implementing policies where they exclusively release material on vinyl only formats. This has been a policy at Common Labour since their start in 2013, and although I doubt the journey has been easy, the label has developed one of the strongest discographies in the underground house scene – sporting phenomenal releases from the likes of artists such as Lukas Lyrestam, Kask, Powel, and Saine.

To celebrate this 5-year journey, the Finnish collective has decided to come out with a new compilation as part of their Odd Jobs series. Aptly titled Odd Jobs Vol. 3, this record pays homage to their hand-stamped, sticker-sealed history. Consisting of 4-tracks, this release features music from the likes of Sames, pothOles, Thomas Wood, and Bolting Bits fave Nachtbraker!

For the A1, the Dutch producer has come out with his very own original Tobogo, which goes much deeper than his usual array of turbo-funked disco bangers. This song actually gives off a distinctly more techno vibe than what we’re used to, and we like it! The tension Nachtbraker is able to establish from the get-go is something to behold, and he does his best in building it up and bringing it down throughout its entirety. Our favorite moment comes in around the 2 minute mark, when he uses a simple vocal sample to cut through all the angst like butter – unleashing a groove that you can’t help but bob your head too.

Do you consider yourself a house head? If so, you know that not a day goes by where you don’t hope for new tunes from Dream 2 Science. New to this world? If so, Dream 2 Science is NYC based legend Cozmo D. Real name Ben Cenac, Cozmo is highly regarded for his role in pioneering electro group Newcleus, and he later enjoyed international success with his jazzy, garage-inclined Sha-lor project. His work as Dream 2 Science was little known outside of a hardcore circle of deep house enthusiasts until Rush Hour reissued his classic self-titled LP. Since then, Ben has been responsible for a few critically acclaimed remixes, but we’ve yet to see a new EP of tunes under the Dream 2 Science alias.

Now that the history lesson is over, let’s get to the nitty gritty. Dropping via Carry On Records on June 8th is an EP titled “True Places” by little known producer, Black Zodiac. Not much information is available about he/she/them online, but we’re glad the two tracker landed in our inbox. Both tracks prove to be excellent little slices of golden-era deep house, fitting for the warm up or come down. The a-side is a bit more shimmery, while the Dream 2 Science remix on the b-side is expectedly deep, and sexy as hell. Cozmo puts heavy focus on the main synth melody, letting it ring out over deep pads and subdued percussive elements, before stripping it away in favor of extended solos. There’s a gorgeous warmth to this track that’s completely arresting. Put simply, a track that helps to clear your mind. It certainly won’t be clearing any dancefloors.

Felipe Gordon has this incredible talent to mix so many different sounds and samples to create his unique style. Funky pianos (or should we say sick ass chords!), wobbling basslines, jazzy samples, disco and funk influences all combined together to make the “Felipe Gordon house sound”. Sometimes more punchy like “Sick ass chords” and “The quint garage”, sometimes more relaxed like “Girl, u don’t know…” and “For those who…”, but you just hear it’s FG from B in C!
