Some meandering words...

Whenever Glastonbury rolls around I am reminded of two key things: my Dad, and my old rave tapes. It is possible I have attached a disproportionate significance to the latter, given that attending the festivals in 92/93/94 were all-consuming, life-changing experiences, but the tapes I bought there remain as the only physical artifacts from those halycon days. The first two years I got in free with my Dad's band (K-Passa, if you're interested; they're still going), and so I would often end up wandering the festival alone without a plan, chatting to randoms and just soaking up the atmosphere.  1992 is strongest in my memory - I recall my Dad shoving me into the band's transit van at the start of the journey; this contained both the band and several crates of K cider liberated from a student ball they'd played the night before. Father wisely opted to drive solo in the family car and was probably fairly amused to see his 16-year-old son emerge from the conveyance into the festival around lunchtime, extremely drunk and almost delirious in his need for a piss. And so it began. K-Passa were ejected from the backstage area by teatime in advance of Van Morrison's arrival, at which point I was amused to see a few middle-aged ladies behind a crash barrier waiting for the secret guest, Tom Jones. I don't recall any knickers being thrown at that point. I was lucky enough to see a few big name acts, but oddly, after cross-referencing against the three line-up posters, I can't pin them. Could have sworn I saw 808 State, or some other 'stadium techno' group - The Orb maybe? Inexplicably the only ones I recall for sure were the grunge band L7 (awesome, but shhhh... we don't talk about that), Galliano, and US3 at the jazz stage ... or was it Oui 3 ... fuck's sake. Look, the real holy grail for this rave kiddy was hanging around the various rave stalls throughout the lazy days, and then after the main stage curfews, dancing way into the small hours without the need for pharmaceutical assistance ... ok that came later ... I was just high on the vibe, man.

Why am I talking about all of this? My tastes back then were all over the place - hardcore/jungle obviously, techno, breakbeat, indie, grunge, jazzy hip hop, gangsta rap, ambient, dub ... but the specific Dave Angel tape above has become a central symbol of those glorious raving days of summers gone by. Jazzy, melodic electronica, sunny, positive and uplifting, transitioning into headbanging techno. I already did one tribute to Dave's unique style back in lockdown ... don't mind telling you I've played it countless times since and for me it's hard to top, but I've had a fair crack at it here. SEVEN label co-founder CRYME was scheduled to play a b2b with his friend Volpe who had to cancel at the last minute due to sickness. Always ready with the freshest music, here we have CRYME solo for a uplifting fun packed hour of the best progressive house, mixed expertly of course.

Dirty Epic welcomes aboard @zanias for our 117th episode of Amplify Series.

Zanias has been haunting underground clubs around the world with her instantly recognisable voice and uniquely ethereal electronic productions since 2011, with the spawning of her first project Linea Aspera in London. She has since relocated to Berlin and released under a multitude of aliases and collaborations, including the band Keluar with Sid Lamar of Schwefelgelb, and vocals for Dax J, Ancient Methods, I Hate Models, Fractions and Infravision (Kendal and Pablo Bozzi). She also co-founded and runs the independent label Fleisch Records, which was a major driving force in the resurgence of electronic body music in the Berlin techno sphere with releases from artists such as Schwefelgelb, Forces, Kontravoid, Infravision and Kris Baha. Her live appearances at Berghain, Khidi, Wave Gotik Treffen and Cruel World Festival alongside Duran Duran and Blondie, as well as guest
appearances on stage singing with the Jesus and Mary Chain, have allowed her voice to reach far beyond the darkwave and EBM corners from which she sprung.

Under her solo moniker Zanias has released an EP and four full-length
LPs, all to underground critical acclaim. Her most recent album, 2024’s
‘Ecdysis’, was praised as “rich in atmosphere and hugely evocative”
when Louder Than War proclaimed it ‘Album of the Week’ upon its
release on Fleisch and Metropolis Records.

With her new alias and its self-titled debut EP ‘Serpentskin’, Zanias
seeks to express the side of herself that feels just as at home in the DJ
booth as on stage with a microphone. Fusing her love of wave and
hyperpop with the structures and textures of trance, she deftly carves a
new niche in dance music with her signature vocals and a taste for
euphoric and evocative melodies.

Serpentskin’s debut EP will be released on Fleisch Records on the 10th
of March, 2025. Vinyl + Digital.

Afternoon all.  

These unusual circumstances of recent months have left me with a desire to change up my listening and mixing habits. I'm getting properly back into my 90s techno, and a Dave Angel tribute mix has been on the to-do list for a while, so here it is. I'm sure you don't need me to introduce this prolific DJ and amazingly gifted producer - personally speaking I was a bit of a Dave Angel superfan back in the day, his jazzy techno sound is genuinely unique. In terms of his DJ selection I do prefer him slightly in melodic mode over banging, but the sets that spanned both were awesome, so that's what you're getting here. Enjoy!
