008 Earl Grey

DJ Earl Grey aka Nik Thorup takes us beyond the dancefloor and into the realm of the cerebral. During his month-long residency at Waxflower, Nik spun a cornucopia of captivating and unique records that always left us hungry for more.

We’re still not sure how Nik managed to intertwine so many polarising genres so effortlessly. Few DJs can stroll from ambient to jazz, from folk to dub, making it sound so organic. Maybe there’s a link to be drawn between this kind of musical curation and some of the more adventurous wine-making processes we’ve come to love at Waxflower. Skin-contact wine often leads to bolder, more intense, and less predictable palates. 

Shady wine-making comparisons aside, it was an honour for us to have Nik play for the whole month. We’ve spent plenty of time listening to his recorded sets, so it was a treat to experience his talent live at Waxflower.

Q. Hey Hannah, what inspiration did you draw upon when putting this mix together? Is there a sound, feeling, or time/place in dance music history that connects all the different elements in one way or another?

A. Hey Myles! Thank you so much for having me on, I’m over the moon to be a part of the series. This mix is a bit of an ode to my favourite time and place to DJ — sunset at a festival or doof in the bush. When the day turns to night is such a special time, especially in these settings, and I really wanted to try and emulate that feeling — starting out soft and building into something a bit euphoric.

Q. Are there any records in the mix that are especially close to your heart, or new or old favourites that you’ve been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment?

A. Yes actually! One that comes to mind is Dario - Sweet Love (Evolution Mix). I found it a few years ago and was obsessed with it but the record was so expensive on Discogs (currently $200!) and I couldn’t find it anywhere else so I kinda gave up on it. When you asked me to do this mix I decided to have another look for it and ended up being able to trade someone for a rip of the vinyl. So happy to finally play it!! Another special one is Kalle-M - This Place. My partner David actually found this and sent it to me a while ago and I love it so much, so shout out to Dave for that one :) and a final special mention for Blue Noise - Coldflow which is close to the end. It gives me goosebumps every time, so intensely emotional and I would be crying if I heard this on a dancefloor!

Q. I know you’ve had quite the busy year on the events front, hosting a number of different parties with great local and international DJs as part of the Luna Blessings and Send/Return collectives. What were some of your favourite moments from the year that was, and what projects are you looking forward to working on in 2024?

A. Thank you! It’s been a crazy year looking back and I’m so grateful to be a part of so many special parties. A moment that stands out was the Waxo Paradiso x Hope Street Radio party the other week, the vibes were so perfect all day. This year I’ve actually played quite a lot of b2b sets which has been so fun, and I’ve had the chance to play interstate a couple of times and in Europe which was amazing :) We’ve got a super stacked year ahead with both Luna Blessings and Send/Return which I can’t wait for! We’re hosting one of my favourite artists ever for Luna in January which we’ll announce very soon. I’m looking forward to more of all of the above in 2024!

DEEP MVMT Guest Mix #056 - Sa3b & CK

Not many people can combine the worlds of contemporary, avant garde and club sounds the way 'A Colourful Storm' label head Moopie can. Having birth the label out of the highly regarded mix series of the same name releasing names like Klon Dump, Valentina Magaletti and some beautiful compilations curated from Time Is Away to name a few, Moopie real name Matthew Xue, has shown he has a phenomenal ear for the diverse and interesting. This same ear also applies to his outstanding DJ sets which have seen him join stages with the likes of Ben UFO, Helena Hauff as well as taking the helms recently in Pickle Factory all night long to a solid packed venue til morning. For this mix Moopie has supplied us with a live recording of his opening set for Objekt and CCL in Melbourne. A perfect example of his vast stylings bringing the mood filled room into a raucous party. We had a quick chat about the mix, whats coming up and the label with the man himself.

Priori (@priori-ties) has always explored a wide range of techno from dense and introspective to more joyous, often against the backdrop of technological possibilities. He hails from Canada and has been prolific since first emerging with two full-lengths to his name on his own NAFF label. They pair dubby undercurrents with crystalline melodies and contain the sort of unresolved tensions that keep you locked in for the ride. This weekend he plays Dekmantel Naarm 2024 but first has served up this new mi for us.

Priori says this is the first dance mix he's done in a long time, adding "It's an hour and a half of fresh rhythms and rave sounds that I recorded while on tour in Australia. It features a few tracks I have been playing a lot lately and some forthcoming bits by myself and some friends." In just over 90 minutes he works through a rollercoaster of deep techno rhythms that are firmly focused on the future and flow as fluidly as water.

My next guest on Yax Invites is Udaii, a 19 year-old Hardgroove DJ/Producer from Adelaide, Australia. 

Udaii has been slowly making a name for himself with various releases gaining traction on Soundcloud. His 90 minute mix taps into all things groove, containing some unreleased music from himself and fellow artists.

Acetic Selects presents James Reid for our fifth instalment. Mr Reid is a British born Dj, producer and founder of label, Sonet Music. He has had a steady stream of quality releases on labels such as Phonic House, Juuz Records and Outpunkt. He will be making the move to Adelaide soon so we welcome him and his dubby minimal style with opens arms. Hopefully we will hear this sound in the future at one of Adelaide's underground parties.

Retro 90s Vinyl Techno Mix Vol. 9

Montreal-based DJ, producer and label owner Francis Latrielle, better known as Priori, joins us for the 79th edition of the Phonica Mix Series.

Priori has become a firm favourite of ours here at Phonica over the past couple of years. His releases, which crossover through many electronic genres, from house and techno to IDM and ambient, have been picked up by such labels as Echovolt and Dust E-1’s Dust World in recent years, although much of his musical output, including his phenomenal 2019 album, ‘On A Nimbus’, comes via his own label, NAFF, which he co-runs with fellow Montrealer Ex-Terrestrial.
