The Gamma Soma Breathing Pacer

Purpose: This music is offered free to the Soma Breath community (Teachers and experienced students). Soma Breath teachers may add spoken coaching as desired. I composed this timing aid primarily for my own use.

Benefits: Similar to Holotropic Breathwork, Wim Hof Breathwork, Kapalabhati Pranayama, etc., Soma Breath has as its aim a state of mind and body that promotes healing, growth, and personal transformation. It involves holding the out breath for as long as 2 minutes. The Western medical term for this is Low Dose Intermittent Hypoxia This breath hold (in Yoga: “Bhaya Kumbhaka”) is prepared through a sequence of rhythmic breathing --a kind of moderated hyperventilation (Yoga: “Bhastrika”), which itself is considered to have many health benefits.

Description: The Gamma Soma Breathing Pacer consists of two rounds of rhythmic breathing: “Bhastrika1” (~9 minutes), and “Bhastrika2” (~7minutes). Following each of these rounds is a period of relative silence (~5 minutes) allowing for a self regulated sequence consisting of: the out breath hold, and in breath hold, a slow breath release, and a rest period for visualization and intention setting. There is no pacing during these portions of the practice apart from a nearly inaudible 40Hz drone.  

To use this pacer plan be undisturbed for at least 30 minutes. Sit or lie down comfortably and practice diaphramatic nose breathing. Although the more uptempo bhastrika is facilitated by exhaling through the mouth, in general mouth breathing is not recommended. The session begins with 3-minute slow breathing sequence (Coherent Breathing 6 second inhale, 6 second exhale with optional OM chant). This is meant to facilitate the “Spanda” or Cosmic Pulse (“flow state”) that is optimal for the practice.  Bhastrika2 begins with a Gamma Breath activation routine (energyofbreathschool.com). The entire session is laced with 40Hz gamma, and hemisphere synchronization entrainment.
