Roy Ayers met Fela Kuti in Nigeria in 1979. They collaborated on a two-song project called "Music of Many Colors", leaning heavily into the ideas of pan-Africanism and Afro-futurism. It was a truly awesome and historic coming together of two legendary musical geniuses.

The project came at a rare moment of optimism in Nigerian politics: the dictatorship had ended and Nigeria’s first democratic elections were held. This helps explain why the LP represents a clear shift from Fela's traditional use of music as a weapon, and rather puts forth a message of positivity and optimism. In the track "2000 Blacks Got To Be Free," they make a bold and optimistic prediction that the world would improve significantly for Black people by the year 2000. The track begins with the vocals of Ayers, as he sets the tone for the project: “We’re hoping that by the year 2000; we know that by the year 2000, that’s even better, everybody will be knowledgeable.”

Four decades have passed since Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers put forth this optimistic vision, and, this very day, masses of protestors are denouncing police brutality and demanding racial justice for Black people. Dishearteningly, we are far off from Roy and Fela's prediction in 1980. It can be demoralizing to compare the future that Fela and Roy envisioned with the reality that we’re living in today, in 2020.

Despite this hard truth, I don't believe this track was ever about accurately predicting the future. I think it was meant to teach us that positivity, unity, and togetherness is what will get us to a brighter future. In 2020, this message is relevant now more than ever, and, though we know the road will be long, Roy and Fela remind us that we must always look optimistically to the light at the end of the tunnel, however faint it may look from where we stand.

Clouds are our most natural source of inspiration, constantly and unpredictably shifting as they dance slowly through the sky. A nimbus cloud is one which produces precipitation, representing the release of a cloud's energy. In many ways, a nimbus symbolizes the energy on a dancefloor, slowly accumulating until a sudden release, after which the cycle repeats, over and over again. Though all clouds follow this lifecycle, each follows its own unique journey, and none the two are ever the same.

Bisön is a DJ and producer based in Los Angeles. Like many who grew up in the 90s on the East Coast of the United States, he was immediately influenced by American hip-hop and jazz, along with classics in soul and funk. He began playing the violin at an early age, exploring both classical music and modern interpretations of the genres he had grown to love. After graduating from university, Bisön began working at YouTube, where his interactions with the many artists who discovered popularity on the platform inspired him to pursue a more advanced musical career. By 2015, he began performing at parties and events in San Francisco, developing a reputation for blending genres and influences, all the while focused on having fun. After a successful series of produced events under the ‘Bermuda Soul’ moniker, he started to pursue his passion for electronic music full-time in 2018 as a DJ and producer.

Unsurprisingly, Bisön began this career in Berlin, searching for and playing at any club or party that would have him at the helm. After a series of stints in the city, and an increasingly popular mix series known as ‘Sound Galore’, he began to successfully find gigs abroad, playing in more than 10 countries around the world throughout the year. In this time, he found other outlets to develop his creative energy, including the production of a retro-synth short film score (based on the 1950’s novel ‘The Martian Chronicles’), as well as various visual works to accompany his mix series. Looking forward, he has relocated back to Los Angeles and is focused on building a home in its scene, producing a series of tracks and mixes, and hosting a monthly residency to further develop his talents. He has also launched the LA-based event production company HOLOGRAPHIC, and will be building out innovative and multi-sensory events on the West Coast.
