Episode 61 has arrived and we are jumping into the last episode for the How To Handle Music Business series. For the last episode, we invite none other than the fierce blend queen DJ Noir to the show. She’s the co-founder of @JukeBounceWerk, an international collective of producers and DJs, who have laid the groundwork in expanding the Chicago Juke and Footwork sound in Los Angeles and across the globe. 

DJ Noir has been working in music and nightlife since the early 90s, priming her impeccable DJ chops in LA’s drum and bass scene. Now, she continues to pour her energy, wisdom and care into her community with JBW. She’s a mama bear and a mentor, continually encouraging her crew and those hungry to excel in the music world to perfect their skills. She does it all while churning out heavy-hitting mixes, touring and releasing her own production under the moniker Phyliss Jaxson.

Noir has used her platform to speak out against some of the social injustices Black artists often face in the industry. In 2020, the star penned an essay in DJ Mag that explored how language can be used to appropriate and erase Black artists with the rise of the 160 movement.

Shannon spoke to the music titan about Juke Bounce Werk’s early beginnings, what it takes to make it in the industry and what artists should do to build meaningful relationships. Noir also spoke about some of the backlash she received from her DJ Mag article and why it was important to address the glaring elephant in the room.

Episode 30 is here! Thank you to all of the new followers we’ve made over the last week! For this episode, Shannon chats with HOURGLASS.  She’s the producer, DJ, and event curator that’s shaking things up in Atlanta’s growing club scene. 

A member of creative collective WERC Crew, HOURGLASS and her team have been creating fun and inclusive spaces for folks to catch a whole vibe on the dancefloor.   

Whether she’s setting it off at her Down For Whatever parties or opening up for big names like Sango and Kaytranada, HOURGLASS organizes and conceptualizes branded events that make you feel like you’re apart of the community. 

The Atlanta native wowed so many over with her stellar Boiler Room performance in 2018, crafting a hefty set filled with timeless classics and a melody of Afrobeat, Hip Hop, and Reggae cuts. HOURGLASS’S career instantly took off, sending the happy DJ all around the world to tour until 2020 hit.  Despite nightlife being at a standstill HOURGLASS has figured out a way to pivot and still maintain a connection with her fans, all with the help of Twitch. 

During her "Think Outside The Clock" show on Twitch, HOURGLASS hops on her weekly live stream to play music for fans and she even shares exclusive interviews. The most amazing part is that she does it all safely from the comfort of home. The sweet artist made time to chat with Shannon about how she’s been able to grow an organic following on her Twitch channel and how to create your own in-home live stream set up.

Hailing from the West Side of Chicago, TRAXMAN has witnessed the evolution of the city’s rich music history as a producer, with releases stretching back to the height of Ray Barney’s Dance Mania and now he stands at the forefront of Chicago’s iconic Footwork and Juke scene.

As one of the founders of Chicago’s  G.E.T.O. DJz and an honorary member of Teklife, TRAXMAN continues to spread Chicago’s kinetic and syncopated sound of Footwork worldwide.

TRAXMAN shares stories about his upbringing and musical influences as he walks us down memory lane of how it all began for his incredible music career.

"Work It, Juke It, Bang It!" With TRAXMAN

For Ep. 32 we take it to the motherland to have a nice chat with Wamya Tembo who is becoming known for his dynamic and club-ready sounds. Driven by impressive drum arrangements with stylized rhythms that take on the sound of South African genres like GQOM and Nigeria’s Afrobeat, Tembo shines under his producer moniker @SHESpellsDoom. Hailing from Lusaka, Zambia, Tembo has released a number of heavy tracks that are sure to pack out and move any dancefloor. 

For the last episode of 2020, Shannon and SHE Spells Doom chat about music coming out of Zambia and around the continent, why creativity can emerge from doing nothing, Afrobeat's popularity around the world, and the burgeoning producer shares what it was like to perform at this year’s NYEGE NYEGE Festival.

Growing Pains With Talaya McCain

For episode 34 we travel to Nairobi, Kenya for a chat with an artist whose whimsical voice and impeccable production paints a vivid story of her experiences growing up on the continent. Meet Nabalayo. 

She's the pioneer of the Changanya genre, a style that she characterizes as a complex mix of heavy electronic sounds perfectly weaved together with African idioms and light airy vocals.

Nabalayo recently performed at this year’s Nyege Nyege Festival for Black Bandcamp’s stage and she’s only getting started.  

The talented musician talks about her experience growing up in Nairobi and she dives into the process of making her new album "Changanya."
