Location: Saas-Almagell, Switzerland.

Over the years, Berlin has been cited as Oliver Koletzki's main point of reference and, more importantly, his endless source of inspiration. Friedrichshain, one of Berlin's vibrant districts, has always held a special place in Oliver's heart. This is where he started out when he first moved to the city, and this is where he lives now. Kreuzberg's wall paintings adorn Stil vor Talent's cover sleeves and host their headquarters. There are little to no corners in the city that haven't brought a spark of inspiration into the mix. The Schneeweiss compilation series, now at its 12th installment, is built as a form of tribute to all these particles, tied in together into a series of carefully curated tracks. Each compilation stands at the intersection of the musical and cultural surroundings most prominent of their respective times, acting both as a reminder as well as a timeless sound capsule for the years to come. 

Our friend Kellerkind remixes this wonderful track created by Carlos Barbero and Enes Çakır together with Aquarius Heaven. The pleasure and duty to present this belongs to us.

Based in Dubai (UAE) since 2014, the Lebanese-born artist gathered immediate attention with solo signings on Guy Mantzur's Plattenbank. We met each other randomly in club in Berlin back in 2017, we could have never known how important this gathering was for our future. We have always been sympathetic to each other and one day Kataya asked for a back2back in 2019 and Shirley was immediately on board. From that point on it was love and a thick friendship developed. An addiction to unique music tastes permanently grew and we kept on inspiring each other. And then, in the beginning of 2020, S H I R K A Y A was born. We played our first official gig as Shirkaya in February. Since then, not only gigs are on the timeline, also their first producing projects developes.
 
Both love the 80s - we discovered Dark Disco as a common genre. Kataya's funky, bouncy and driving tunes paired with Shirley's dark techno touched and acid basslines will surely leave you unable to stand still.

INTERVIEW:
1. Wie lange legt Ihr nun schon auf und was hat euch (damals) dazu bewegt, anzufangen? Hattet Ihr Support dabei oder wie habt  Ihr das Auflegen gelernt? 

Kat: Ich lege seit 2017 auf, war aber schon vorher sehr tief in der Musikszene Berlins verankert. Zuvor habe ich eher Partys & Festivals organisiert, hatte also absolut keine Zeit zum Auflegen. Ich war sehr lange Zeit in Frankreich und als ich wieder zurück nach Berlin kam & eine Trennung verarbeiten musste, fing ich mit dem Mixen an. Sobald ich das erste Mal hinter den Decks stand war ich Feuer & Flamme. Das Auflegen habe ich mir selber beigebracht.
Shirley: Das erste Mal kam ich 2017 mit dem Mischpult in Berührung. Ich habe mich lange im HipHop Cosmos aufgehalten und den Gedanken aufzulegen bereits vor vielen Jahren gehabt. Dieser Musik Nerd steckte halt schon immer in mir und wollte nun endlich die komplette Crowd mit guter Mukke versorgen. höhö... und natürlich zum Tanzen bewegen. <3

2. Was ist euer bisher schönstes gemeinsames Erlebnis beim Auflegen gewesen?

Shirkaya: Unser erstes Mal zusammen auflegen war absolut ausschlaggebend für unseren weiteren gemeinsamen Werdegang. Es war in der Beate Uwe in Berlin & es hat gefunkt. Seither leben wir die Musik zusammen und sind sehr gute Freundinnen geworden.

3. Was wünschst Ihr Euch, sollte in Zukunft in der Clubszene .anders laufen? 

Shirley: Sexismus sollte ernster genommen werden, denn er ist überall. Bessere Awareness Konzepte wären super!
Kat: Auffällig ist, dass Frauen oftmals nach Bookings gefragt werden, eher um ein ausgeglichenes Line-Up zu präsentieren und nicht weil sich die Booker ihre Musik richtig angehört haben. Sie werden oftmals nichts als Künstlerinnen wahrgenommen, sondern als Lückenfüller und auch das muss sich ändern.

Shirkaya: Wir wünschen uns mehr Achtsamkeit und Diversität hinter dem Pult.

4. Gibt es irgendeine Arbeit oder ein Projekt, das euch gerade sehr am Herzen liegt?  

Shirkaya: Wir legen nicht nur zusammen auf, sondern sind auch Teil der Culturama Crew. Unser Herzstück ist der Culturama Bus (ein London Doppeldecker Bus, den wir mit Hilfe einer Crowdfunding Kampagne ausbauen lassen haben), mit dem wir hoffentlich dieses Jahr nun endlich ein paar schöne Projekte durchführen können. "David Hasert is the founder of LIKE Records and a key figure in the electronic music scene of Cologne. He is also the face of the nightclub "Reineke Fuchs" and responsible for the club’s unique success.

After releases & remixes on Stil vor Talent, Wolf and Lamb, Beats In Space, Dantze, DFA, Katermukke, Underyourskin, Kompakt Records (as Damh with Remixes by Dj Koze and Matt Karmil) and his own label LIKE Records David is playing numerous shows all over the country and in different parts of the world.

Before he started to focus on electronic music, David played in some bands including MALK which became a post punk electro Myspace phenomenon. Major label releases on labels such as Motor Music were the result after uploading a few tracks and a fake bio on Myspace.

It’s no wonder David influences reach far beyond electronic music which he skillfully performs on his debut album “Small-town Boy” in 2013. His productions can be heard in his DJ & Live Sets which can be described as energetic and dreamy at the same time creating a special vibe on the world’s dancefloors."

David Hasert - You can`t put your arms around a melody

“It`s my very first track, back to time then people always told me „everything sounds the same“ but when I showed them this track everybody was like „sorry this is no techno , no pop, nothing we know.. we can`t release this“
So I came back to release it by myself and from then on everything went off.
Nowadays I´m always happy when somebody tells me - we can´t put your music in any genre. In times where everybody tries to be something else it´s important to find your own way. I wish I could do music with more naivety like back in that days."

'The mind behind Yet! Records, Spain’s Sergio Parrado turns 25 years in the industry and he’s celebrating with “Back Too late” which has a powerful remix done by the master Mihai Popoviciu.

The original track which was produced during quarantine period, is a tribute to the big influences of Sergio through all his career. “Back Too Late” creates an exquisite balance between progressive house and deep house, its powerful bass, spatial synths and strong percussions along a vocal line makes this song probably one of the best works of his career. On the other hand Mr. Mihai Popoviciu takes it to his field preserving the original one but giving it his particular vision and making it more deep.

If Alpha was all about loopy old school sounding techno, 'Beta' is taking a deeper approach without reducing the raw energy that the two producers are known for.

Oliver and Pfirter have spent the last few years honing a unique writing process.
The process itself is very simple, as the pair explains:
- Most tracks start with that Oliver’ recording ‘live takes’ with his machines, then passing these recordings to Pfirter who is in charge of the mixing and arrangement.
“So far we haven't done many retakes or even had to revisit the tracks more than a few times” says Pfirter.
