2020 sees Ormatie returns to Proton Music after an eight-year hiatus with a brand-new original EP in the shape of "Taifun / Uragan". Remixes come from Irish and Moldovan stalwarts.

An artist who burst onto the progressive house scene in 2008 with a remix of Andy Moor & Markus Schulz for the latter's Coldharbour imprint and the three-track "Emoke" EP for Nick Warren's Hope, Ormatie rose rapidly to the highest echelons of the underground dance industry. Further work for Hope and a clutch of credits for Proton, including July 2009's "Birthdays" and September 2010's "Mon Etoile" saw continued success. Now, the Russian returns in 2020 with a new twin-track EP. "Taifun" is full of trademark intricate rhythms and immaculately programmed melodic elements. Swaying gently across the stereo spectrum, a filtered arpeggio wax and wanes, while smooth pads speed and slow with sublime synchronised LFO. Building elegantly into the third movement a bassline progression and emotive chords provide the perfect vehicle for a swathe of counterpoint melodies and searing lead line to flourish. "Uragan" opens with deep kick and fizzing percussive top-line that fills the aural senses. Before long an arpeggio works its off-kilter magic alongside muted stabs that ping-pong left and right. A glorious bassline adds weight and layers of melody paint a vibrant picture from a wonderful sonic palette.

Gavin Mulhall's Silinder alter-ego needs little introduction to those familiar with the Proton Music catalogue. Always in-demand with his flawless production work and innate talent, the Irish artist continues to carve his name into the annals of underground dance music. Since his "Corrupt" debut in September 2012, 2013's "Solas" and 2015's "Basement" have both showcased outstanding original work, while remixes for Andre Sobota, Terry Grant and Dousk has further showcased Silinder's talent. Returning after an August 2019 reworking of Imran Khan, his remix of "Taifun" is an intelligently crafted affair with its chunky rhythmic framework and innovative use of original components. In trademark fashion, a superfluity of original production material infuses Silinder's work, replete with delayed-drenched motifs and reverb-coated keys. The result is a perfect example of why his name is still held in such high regard.

Alex and Andrew have found much success with their two-headed dragon alter-ego. Through Lanvary, the duo has consistently hit the heights with their inventive musical ideas and unique sonic identity. Regulars on Particles since 2015 with the "Micromegas", "Penumbra" and "Leviathan" EPs, 2017's "Venus" and October 2019's "Everything You Feel", lit up the Proton Music catalogue with vivid original work. Adding remixes for Andre Sobota, Hot TuneiK and GMJ & Matter to their burgeoning portfolio, the Lanvary interpretation of "Taifun" is energy-driven affair that packs a punch with wonderfully grooved bassline and rhythmic backdrop. Smooth melodic flourishes that owe their origins to the Ormatie original, glitter before a new motif form the Lanvary production studio emerges in jaunty fashion alongside sympathetic pads to create a highly innovative and impressive reworking.

A powerful storm front has thrust Ormatie back into the limelight with "Taifun / Uragan" and remixes from Silinder and Lanvary.

Ormatie - Taifun (Lanvary Remix)

Operating out of his Melbourne home, Sam Hopgood makes a very welcome debut on Particles with his "Lobster" EP. Two originals are complemented by remixes from Australia and Belarus.

An artist with a long history in the world of underground electronic music, Sam Hopgood has been "composing and performing music all his life". Initially under the Broken Spires moniker and latterly under his own name, Sam has continued to make sonic waves. A regular in the clubs of his Australian home, supporting the likes of Guy J, Henry Saiz and Apparat, production work has made its way to Brain Food Records, Lauter Unfug and Wide Angle Recordings. Making his Particles debut, the title track is a high-energy affair with mesmerising lead-line that cascades across nine minutes with verve and vigour. A driving beat and symphony of spot effects add intrigue as the lead synth filters its way into listener consciousness. The result is a strong and memorable debut. Marked by its rolling percussive backdrop and layers of textured pads, "Coping Mechanism" cuts a more restrained figure than its vibrant counterpart. Vocal layers and grooved bassline add structural depth while the beautifully stratified layers of sound provide the perfect antidote for the stresses of modern life to melt away.

Originally as part of the groundbreaking Infusion outfit, winner of two ARIA awards and responsible for shaping the underground dance scene at the turn of the millennium and beyond, Jamie Stevens has gone on to find notable success with his eponymous work. Making regular appearances on Mitch Alexander's uber-cool microCastle imprint as well as Darin Epsilon's Perspectives Digital and John Digweed's Bedrock, Stevens has continued to shine a light on his relevance and longevity within a notoriously fickle industry. A remix of Rudy's "All Things Fade" in November 2019 marked an impressive Proton Music debut as a reworking of "Lobster" continues the pattern for Particles. Bringing back the much-loved breaks genre of yesteryear, a gloriously rolling groove supplies the perfect backdrop for key elements from the original to glisten in effected and reimagined fashion as they pan across the stereo spectrum. Rising and falling with ease, Stevens' "Break in the Shell Remix" coruscates across its near 7-minute journey with attention to detail and immaculate sound design in full effect.

Michael A has been at the forefront of the underground industry since a 2012 debut for Stereofaza. A staggering 900 production credits later and the Belarusian continues to dominate with a vast array of music signed to the likes of Mango Alley, Balkan Connection and Sudbeat Music. Furthermore, his own Genesis imprint continues to represent an impressive vehicle for his own music and a host of others. Late 2013 and early 2014 saw a Particles debut as part of the "Fall" and "Winter" compilations, while 2014's "Behind the Moon" and 2017's "Sapphire" saw full EP's grace the catalogue. Remixes for GMJ, James Monro and Kynan Cosma showcased a different side to Michael A's production skillset as he now returns to the label for the first time since late 2018. His remix of "Lobster" carries the same melodic intensity as the original as a clicking and popping percussion encases the track in a crisp rhythmic shell. Building hypnotically, familiar refrains evolve effortlessly alongside a swathe of effects and additional melodies from the Belarusian's imagination, exploding into life at the mid-point and beyond.

The latest release from Clubsonica Records welcomes D.J. MacIntyre to the label for his debut single. Hailing from California, the US artist owns a healthy discography, highlighted by appearances on 3rd Avenue, Desert Trax and his own SLC-6 Music imprint. Well travelled as a DJ, the Santa Barbara resident has appeared at some of the world's most prestigious events, most notably Burning Man and the Lucidity Festival, while also showcasing his borderless programming skills in Moscow, Siberia and all across the United States. Now following the release of his critically acclaimed 'Constellations: Gemini' Mix collection, D.J. MacIntyre debuts on Clubsonica with 'Conquistador' alongside remixes from D-Formation and Ruls.

Although D.J. MacIntyre's broad sonic palette is well noted, on 'Conquistador' he sticks close to his progressive minded roots. Constructed with peak time sensibilities, the US artist crafts a devilish blend of pulsating rhythms and hypnotic themes. Astral stabs provide unique hooks, while electric lines and percussive flurries steal the air at opportune moments. A well-crafted break is the icing on the cake, shifting the narrative further into emotive territory with tasteful melodies and airy atmospherics, before a powerful drop segues into a cosmic finale.

The first interpretation of 'Conquistador' is provided by D-Formation who makes his label debut here. The Spanish artist has been a fixture of the electronic underground for over two decades. Appearances on Einmusika, Suara, Yoshitoshi and his Beatfreak Recordings imprint highlight his discography, as he continues to travel the globe delighting fans with his powerful take on melodic house and techno. Always a sought-after remixer, D-Formation now makes his Clubsonica debut with a superb rendition of 'Conquistador'. Beginning with a punchy kick and crunchy groove, the Spanish artist slowly works in the mystical themes and cosmic effects from the original. Rolling grooves and icy overlays only enhance its electric nature, perfectly transitioning the piece into a second act of charged rhythms and driving percussion. A cavernous break showcases a unique contrast of tension and emotion, building anticipation with each successive loop as a tasteful crescendo cues a monstrous third act.

The second and final interpretation of 'Conquistador' is provided by Ruls who also makes his label debut here. Hailing from Mexico, Raul Mejia aka Ruls has also enjoyed a long history in electronic music dating back to 1999 when he created one of his country's most recognized trance projects 'Ecliptic'. Also operating the downtempo moniker Lunar Sound, Raul earned the praise of some of the underground's premiere tastemakers such as Sasha, Maceo Plex, Richie Hawtin and Jimmy Van M. Fast forward to present day and Ruls continues to push his creative boundaries, while heading up the highly regarded Undergroove Music imprint. Now presenting his first new music of 2020, Ruls debuts on Clubsonica with a powerful take on 'Conquistador'. Coming in a touch more techno inspired than its predecessors, the Mexican artist strips the groove down for a dynamic journey filled with intriguing sonic artefacts. As drifting atmospheres and fragmented melodies descend over the framework, sweeping effects and tranquil motifs continue to tantalize the senses. Anticipation builds as the main break progresses with unconventional shifts and a cinematic air carrying the storyboard, before the melodic fragments melt away into an otherworldly finale. A stunning interpretation from Ruls which caps off another must have release from Clubsonica, who continue to deliver a great blend of new and veteran talent as the label's journey unfolds.
