Cloudhaven Trailer 1

This piece was inspired by time spent in a park near my apartment. I love this park for the forested trails, the pond with turtles and frogs, and the great variety of birds. It’s nice to feel alone in the forest sometimes. But no matter where you are in the park, you can always hear the sounds of people just out of sight – the ever-present hum of the highway, the planes passing overhead, the announcer at the local high school’s baseball game. It’s hard to truly get away from it all. 

Recent research has suggested that human-made noise has a much greater impact on nature than we previously considered. One species of bird has been found to sing at higher pitches in the city than their more rural counterparts, in order to be heard over the ambient din of the city. In Idaho, when some researchers constructed a phantom highway through a forest by stringing up speakers playing traffic noise, they found that migratory birds tended to avoid the area near the highway noise.

It seems there is no corner of the globe that we have not affected in some way – often through noise or other types of pollution. As a result, there are few (if any) places left that are truly wild. The better we understand the extent of the impact we’ve had on this earth, the closer we will be to learning how to correct past wrongs and prevent further damage. And maybe, one day, we will learn to live as one with Nature.
