States Of Matter

Atsuko Hatano is a contemporay classical Viola player who works with electronics to add textures and layers to her sound. Located in Tokyo, Japan, she is a commanding instrumentalist and composer who constructs innovative compositions with strings and layered electronics.

Cells #5 is an orchestral collection and sequel to her previous album Cells #2 which will also be released on cassette via Imprec’s Cassauna label. Cells #5 required three years to complete and the work features the artist’s signature methodology where the instrumental performances are gradually enveloped by multiple layers of a string orchestration. 

When not playing solo Atsuko is extremely active recording, collaborating and playing live with Jim O’ Rourke, Eiko Ishibashi, Mocky and many more acts.

Cette pièce est issue de l’exposition Floating Between the Tropical and Glacial Zones organisée par l’auteur et Seiha Kurosawa à Tokyo en 2021. Elle combine deux environnements qu’apparemment tout oppose : la banquise de la mer d’Okhotsk et la forêt tropicale amazonienne. En mêlant froid et chaud, sa composition propose une nouvelle perspective sur notre environnement.

L’auteur compare l’enregistrement de terrain à un acte de « chasse méditative ». Il se présente comme un observateur de la relation « d’indifférence » entre l’humanité et la nature. En général, il compose des paysages immersifs, dans le but de provoquer des expériences sensorielles singulières.

Pour son nouveau format "j'irais mixer chez vous", @salam_music débarque chez @pont-levis. Après une vie à Saint-Etienne et 5 ans passé au sein du crew Positive Education puis la fondation de son crew Illegal Imposture orienté Rave music qu’il dirige pendant 2 ans, son amour pour les frites le pousse à bouger à Bruxelles fin 2020.  Il en profite pour se concentrer sur son projet Pont-Levis et oriente son style musical vers le downtempo, la bass tout en gardant le regard fixé sur le cosmos.

"Voice Figures" release has been inspired by the research of Margaret Watts Hughes and her eidophone tool for visualising specific frequencies, geometrical & natural forms produced by vibrations of the human voice.

"At first, when directing the voice against the semi-liquid mass upon the centre of the disc, there is a feeling as if some impassable barrier were encountered and that it would be as easy to move a mountain with a push of the hand as to set that colour heap moving by the action of a note." I performed a variation on this experiment based on recording multiple singled frequencies generated by tuning forks, frequency generator and gong, which resonated on the metal surface and inside the soil. I captured reverberated metal surface, secondary resonation through the soil and oscillation of the bowl. The experiment is accompanied by recordings of water, coffee beans, my voice and string recordings in varied pitch and velocities.
