We first became aware of Mike Weis through his drumming in Chicago's Zelienople, in which he blended hypnotic, delicate grooves and shimmering auxiliary percussion into the band's unique downcast drone-folk. In recent years, Weis has expanded his exploration into meditation and ritual in music performance, exemplified by this set recorded for the 2018 Winter Solstice. Weis' mix of such unconventional percussion instruments as tongue drum, dholak, and changgo, as well as gongs, bells, and objects, all performed live, is typical in its unerring time, tightly controlled dynamics, and dense yet drifting atmosphere. The music settles in places which aren’t visible upon first sight, and, like walking through a foggy, mid-December field, pock-marked with patches of snow and tufts of brown grass, sounds reveal themselves for a moment of recognition and familiarity, only to recede, vignetted by the enveloping atmosphere. Mike Weis has been deeply admired by Notice since our inception, and In Low Light provides an engaging illustration of his practice.

Veelargo es un productor de música electrónica español que reside en Polonia (Cracovia) desde 2016, después de haber vivido en Inglaterra dos años.

Empezó a interesarse por la música siendo adolescente y su pasión por ella le llevó primero a pinchar y gradualmente a producir. Sus influencias son muy variadas y van desde el IDM, Ambient, Electro o Techno, al Krautrock, EBM o Post Punk.

Para Veelargo, componer música electrónica es sinónimo de libertad absoluta y lo considera como constante aprendizaje, rigiéndose por cierta disciplina basada en constancia para aprender y mejorar su técnica.

Para el segundo podcast de Mutoscope Records, Veelargo ha grabado en exclusiva un directo de sus propias producciones (algunas aún inéditas). Durante la escucha, la primera conclusión es más que evidente, Veelargo rehúye lo convencional y promueve su evolución creativa desde el extremo.

Veelargo inunda al oyente con un gran acopio de sonidos orgánicos, por momentos hipnóticos y transparentes, administrándolos a la perfección con percusiones procesadas y melodías preciosistas. En cuanto al planteamiento rítmico, el artista mantiene la atención del oyente a través de medios tiempos y estructuras más complejas y contundentes, que en algunas ocasiones se retuercen en pedazos, siendo éstos los instantes más arriesgados del live.

Lo más relevante es que todos los elementos, sonidos e ideas de este directo identifican un sonido propio, dejando entrever la inquietante personalidad de su creador durante todo el desarrollo del mismo.

When ACL first started producing mixes, I knew that I didn't just want to invite artists and labels. We've always imagined ACL as a part of a broader community. As such I've often invited mixes from amateurs, from listeners and fellow critics. This mix is one of those.

Philippe Requena is a music lover who lives near Paris, and has been producing mixes casually for some time now, just putting them out once he's gathered enough tracks and samples. We will be featuring more of his mixes in the near future.
