Dead Pest Records is proud to announce our next release, a 4 track EP from label boss Grey.scale entitled "The Wireless EP" [DPREP002] that will be available through all reputable webstores & streaming services on Friday July 2nd. Pre-orders will be available soon.

Dedicated in loving memory of Timothy Charles Smith: 1961-2020

The EP is inspired directly by the Cardiacs song "Wireless" from their 1996 album "Sing To God", serving as a sort of mini "concept album" that re-inteprets and retells the story found in the lyrics penned by the late Smith, with all four track titles coming directly from these lyrics. 

The Wireless EP follows the fate of Jenny, a young woman who takes her own life only to find that her ghost becomes trapped inside of her wireless radio.

Hello Sheik, it's a pleasure to have you on the SIMPLYDUBS series. It's been a while since you've appeared on an official Simply Deep release - all the way back in 2016 with your remix of Aerotonin's 'That North'. Have your musical ventures been going well since then? 

2016 seems like a lifetime ago ha! I think over the last few years I’ve taken time back to work on reshaping my sound. I’ve done this with starting 2 aliases which focus on soulful house ‘’S.D.S’ and electro/footwork ‘DJ Shade’ I released an ep under S.D.S entitled ‘The first morning on holiday ep in 2019’ and released some electro with Simply deep for the BLM cause. I’ve also been exploring different genres which has lead to me opening for Moodyman at E1, supporting hot Chip at Brixton jam, doing a live set at the Wire alongside the Zenker Brothers and djing with my friend’s brand Disco Express.  I feel this represents me as I listen to so many different sounds. If you check my bandcamp/soundcloud everything should be there as I have so many different releases since 2016!

What's your favourite track from this mix? 

Tony Phorse - Zartan in Reverse remix I did. I remember being inspired by the Mumdance in reverse track. This got released on 10’’ under District sound and did a lot of rounds on the airwaves.

What's your favourite hardware/software/plugin to use when you are producing? 

Aira TR8/9. I think seeing Jeff Mills manipulate a drum machine like he did 9as well as being a drummer myself) it was the kit I needed and its juts so fun to use.

What music release from this year have you enjoyed the most? 

Bad - Calibre & DRS V Mark Ernestus. Big, Bold and Dubby (I sound like a hardwax advert ha)

Have you been working on many new tracks at the moment, any forthcoming releases from yourself we should keep an eye out for?

I am currently working on a collab EP with my brother Drime and potentially releasing an EP on my bandcamp.

Has the global Covid-19 pandemic affected your creativity in regards to production?

100% - I haven't produced as much over the pandemic and I think its made me realise how much going out and hearing live music aids my creativity. Hopefully we are back out soon, preferably with the hugest sound systems known to man

By now I'm sure you are all painfully aware of the horrific extrajudicial murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis MN and subsequent protests that have been met with shocking acts of police brutality. Sadly this is only the most recent example of an innocent black citizen being murdered in cold blood at police hands, and until major changes are made it likely will not be the last. This is the direct result of a long history of systematic, institutionalized racism that dates back to the very founding of modern policing and beyond.

The music that we promote and that we love is forever indebted to the work of black artists going back across generations. To remain silent and complicit in their suffering, while also profiting off the back of a culture that they built, would be an act of inexcusable hypocrisy and is not something that we could keep a clean conscience with.

Dead Pest Records is committed to supporting the rights and freedoms of black & POC communities, both in The Unites States and worldwide. We stand in solidarity with all victims of racial abuse and discrimination, and of police brutality. We are dedicated to materially providing Mutual Aid to these communities in whatever ways we can in the hope that this can be of some benefit in building a more equal and egalitarian society for all.

As a label, and as people, we are staunchly in permanent opposition to racism, fascism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, colonialism, imperialism, economic inequality and 'The Police' as an institution.
