Nice and cool stuff

I wanted to do another Jazz standard with just my trusty old Gretsch with no bass or drums. Travis/Atkins fingerpicking on one track and some walking bass and fills on the the other track.

It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)

Well this is  Bert Kaempfert's Moon Over Naples instrumental. Charles Singleton And Eddie Snydor wrote lyrics to the melody and called it Blue Spanish Eyes. Almost everybody under the sun has sung the song ,the biggest hit probably was sung by Al Martino. I pulled the heavy bass line and a bit of the orchestra from a Bert  Kaempfert Vinyl 331/3 lp I have. i then added a steady chording guitar track. I then played the melody straight and pure a la Duane Eddy's tremelo twang sound. To that I played another guitar with a delay sound to get the melody and fills an octave higher.

I was totally thinking about Duane Eddy when I improvised this tune I never met the man but I am still saddened by his recent passing. It feels like I knew him. I listened to him play his Guitar since I was 14. His sound more than anything hooked me on the idea of even trying to learn to play a guitar .Many guitarists have inspired me to play but Duane was the first. I just wanted to create a new guitar tune based on my love of his big Twangy Guitar sound and just feel a bit of Duane in my soul.
I played lead,rythym and bass guitars but the drummer was Les Brown Jr.

Bonnie got a Pontiac.

Last time out she got a flat in the chilling beachfront air
The cop who stopped to help her
Found a gun beside the spare
Bonnie panicked, grabbed it back and shouted “It’s not mine!”
The cop drew fast and fired twice at precisely the same time. 
 
Drove that beast ‘til the wheels came off
On every trip she’d take:
Momma’s house, the diner
Bonfire beach at Sorrow Lake 
Bonnie got a Pontiac 

A cry went up she crumpled down
The gun dropped from her hand
And where it fell the asphalt 
Had a tiny trace of sand…

The barrel cooled, the night air 
Held its breath for pity’s sake;
The quiet waves said, “Shush” on

EMPIRE OF RAIN

New instrumental music written and performed by Spike. A homage to the great Toronto Sound of the '60s and '70s with the screaming Telecasters and wailing B3 organs. I added the horns as a nod to my time in Lighthouse in the late 1970s.

Bad Grammar

In 1959 Duane Eddy and the Rebels recorded this and it climbed to #9 on the Billboard charts .Pretty high for an instrumental. Al Casey a pretty good guitarist was a member of the Rebels at that time and co- wrote the tune with Duane. It was among the first recordings of Duane Eddy that I heard and I have always loved and wanted to play it ,but I had never recorded it until now. My brother Cliff and I did play it back in the 60'S at beach parties etc., but we couldn't do the Steve Douglas sax parts which we loved. I found a backing band with the sax in it ,so I had to put my guitar track on that. I extended the track from the original to have a bit more fun with it.

Forty Miles Of Bad Road

In 1990 One of Japans treasures visited Edmonton to perform his compositions on Koto Harp. He was staying at a friend of ours home I was invited over to bring my guitar and jam with him. That is how I came to meet Kicho Takano and his lovely wife Michiko. It was a magical afternoon. He was a master musician who traveled the world performing in many concerts either solo or with other great musicians. I certainly had not  earned an opportunity to be in the company of such a renowned Japanese Koto musician. I was able to improvise along with his playing and it felt like magic and was a great inspiration to me. He was so gracious and made me feel confident in his company. He asked me to play something I played, so I picked a country piece called Freight Train He joined in easily improvising Koto lines that embellished what I was doing .Again Magic! He gave me a couple of CDs of his .I recently decided to play some guitar with him again using his CD to see if the Magic of that day could be revisited. This is 2024 and Kicho Takano would be 100 years old this year.

Always loved this tune after hearing  Chet  Atkins brother Jim sing on an old Atkins album.Jim was a jazz guitarist that played with the Les Paul jazz group so he was no slouch on guitar either. Al put thythm and lead on a backing track for this one.

Fell in love with Guitar sounds since I first heard Duane Eddy twanging out Rebel Rouser. Then I heard  Chet Atkins Hi Fi in Focus album. This was back around 1960.Me and my brother Cliff got guitars as soon as we could and started learning ourselves to play some tunes. Now about 60 years later I am still loving it. I lost Cliff last year but his jazz loving influence is still present in my playing. You can just never stop learning new stuff and ways of playing when you love the sound a guitar makes. My son Bryce also fell in love with guitar and he also is a fine singer. Il be also posting some songs that have been able play along with him.I  just hope there are people who will enjoy the music I play and post, thankyou Al Gibbs
