Here comes mix number 12 in the series, kindly contributed by our long time dear friend Suso Sáiz (@saizsuso) who gave it the title 'Oat Flakes Falling In My Carpet At Sunset - Japanese Ambient 1'. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Suso. You live in central Spain, right? How important is living there for you and your music?

S: I live in a little town not far away from Madrid. It’s very quiet and I’m in contact with nature. I feel good in the place where I live. My choice to live there is not arbitrary as I need peace and silence to work and this place meets all the conditions.

MFM: In 2019 we happily received and released your latest album Nothing is Objective where in the liner notes you say you never listen back to a finished piece of music. Why is that? Isn't that an important part of learning and progress?

S: Usually, I’m not so interested in the past. I prefer to live present time as deeply as possible and sometimes, to dream in the future as the child I was. Listening to my own work tends to be self-destructive as I’am aware of glitches that grow up as time goes by. Meanwhile, my pieces begin to move away from reality. My intention is to evolve continuously. I spend a long time working in them as to allow my “new self” (that appears as a result of my evolution) to destroy them.

MFM: Do you actively look for and listen to other people's music though? 

S: I’m a melomaniac before a musician. Listening to music is one of my greatest pleasures as well as an endless source of knowledge. My listening is very eclectic. You can find my inspiration in music and musicians as Miles Davis, Steve Reich, Ralph Towner, King Crimson, Mahler, African and Indonesian ethnic music, etc.  

MFM: Do you visualize an idea for a piece of music before you start writing it? Could give a bit insight in how you normally get to write a piece?

S: Musically, I always start with something that I hear inside my head: I cannot specify what it is. That’s the reason why I begin an experimental process that finishes when I synchronize what I hear inside me with the sounds I make.

MFM: Is there such a thing as a Suso state of being when writing music, to get to that "ingravidez"?

S: I usually work alone and at daytime. I try to use the night to sleep. My studio is a cozy place, where peace and quiet are essential to make my work. The “ingravidez” I talk about, is a result of the sound not of a state of mind. I try to set up sound capsules that generate such “ingravidez”, regardless of other conditions. 

MFM: You speak of music as being very spiritual, something that connects to the soul and transcends it's structures and textures. Has your disease played a role in this or did you always approach it that way? 

S: I have always tried to search my deepest self with my music. It’s possible that you find spirituality in that search. Things have not changed with my disease. 

MFM: About your last album you said “It is the most honest album that I have written in a long time. I feel it is honest with myself, as I feel a deep sense of acceptance with who I am and with what I do.” What did this do with your thoughts on any next project? Do you now maybe have a different view concerning collaborations vs. solo works? 

S: I try to make each work unique and although it belongs to a same lifeline, it’s not necessary that they refer to the same things. Obviously, if you collaborate with other artists your point of view changes as it goes through other person filter and your reactions will be upon impulses not generated by yourself. I always try that honesty is a constant that never should disappear from my music. I always try to sound as I am. Actually my intention is not to go to a fancy dress ball, although..”never say never again”..

Honored to welcome recent LA arrival John Jones to the series for Volume 47. He records music solo as Nerftoss / AV Moves / Calvin, and is involved in a collaborative project called Geo Rip. This mix served as an exercise for him to find a meeting point between sounds that initially sparked his interest in the genre of electronic music in the early 2000’s, and the stuff him, his friends, and contemporaries are making now. A sentiment to a past self through moods and melodic elements.
