Lulled into melancholic tales by other joe (@josephbuchan), musician, producer and label head from Melbourne, a city that has given me so much in musical terms. This mix —sketched for loved ones— signifies the 100th landmark at FR, which I celebrate as an enduring and beautiful journey through the ever-expanding music realm. A heartfelt thanks to every soul who has contributed to this project so far.

This key warns a habit,
a rite opening up in practice:

Pupil echoes a lightning

Upstairs//Downstairs, a Melbourne collective that’s been championing international artists for over five years, is now proud to launch its label with Italian-born, London-based producer Big Hands. 

Titled “Anti Militarist Dubs,” the EP stands strong in its message and sound — four cuts built for deep listening and heavy systems. 

Opening with Battle of Cannae, a dubby roller filled with crisp percussion and meditative warmth — the perfect soundtrack for sunlit sound systems. 

A2 — Battle of Carrhae follows closely behind, a deep 120BPM bass groover with detailed percussion and rich textures that tie the first side together beautifully. 

Flipping over, B1 — Stolen Land, a collaboration with Melbourne heavyweight Pugilist, takes things into club territory. Spacious, weighty and rhythmically twisted, filled with polyrhythmic grooves, a few wubs, and gritty percussive drive. Strap in. 

Closing the record, B2 — Battle of Edessa pushes the tempo to 160BPM — a sharp, hypnotic finisher that shows why Big Hands continues to stand out as one of the most exciting producers doing it right now.

Following Locks On Our Doors, Not On Our Hearts, a long form confessional for Blackest Ever Black, M. Quake returns to redirect relationship lament into alternate, shifting worlds for 'Fall in Love With Yourself' via Purely Physical.

Intentionally released on Valentines Day, we are treated first to an off the cuff philosophy on “how to love”. Side A uses a sample from an interview with Eartha Kitt, her voice sitting atop Quake’s stripped back, sticks ‘n’ stones production style which utilises background noise elements in the interview - birds chirping, dogs barking - with Eartha’s powerful attitude emphasised by an almost gospel-like dubbed out organ.

Side B, in classic instrumental dub style, acts almost as a demonstration or exhibition of this new found self love, giving us the fully fleshed out version that unveils all the sounds present in the A side and plays to all of the producer's strengths. What’s left of the vocal is echoed to smithereens, the sub bass line and resonant chords all harmoniously combining to create a surreal, Disneyland-like utopian setting.

Having previously held court in several secret circles including F ingers, Th Duo, Tarcar and - possibly - Kallista Kult, Quake’s influences are audible and there for the taking. With 'Fall in Love With Yourself' and its BEB predecessor, a significant solo narrative is beginning to take shape, shimmying out of the dark.
