Experimental sound artist KMRU(@kamarujoseph)is a master of quietness. His music is as much about empty space as it is the delicate field recordings that fill it in. The Kenyan artist has been perfecting this balancing act from his base in Berlin, most notably on 2020 full-length Peel. It's a record of slowly unfolding synth beauty and drawn-out drone mindfulness. Soft focus chords bleed and blend into one another like different shades of watercolour paint and the environmental nature of the sound sources lends it a gorgeously natural atmosphere.
For this week's most meditative mix, KMRU puts together an hour of soothing sound in a painterly fashion. It is unhurried but always going somewhere thanks to a gentle underlapping rhythm, expansive synth arc or little hiss of static. What sounds like distant vocal calls drift in and out of the mix which at times is like a recording from the furthest recess of the cosmos, at others the pleasant ambiance you might hear out of a Berlin window on a sunny afternoon.

Today I am happy to share the latest edition of Deep Mind Music. This one is a live recording of the set I played on the 8th of May at Sonic Garden, sat on a very comfy sofa in the tree-covered terrace of IKLECTIK in South London 🌱

Many thanks to @avsluta & Christian Duka (@dvka) of Amoenus for the invite, it was a joy to play an extended set to such an engaged audience of listeners. The Amoenus sound system at IKLECTIK also has to be the most beautiful system I’ve ever played ambient music through, everything sounded so crisp and warm.

This set features a lot of the ambient and experimental music I’ve been enjoying lately, with an extended expedition into the ~dronezone~ (🖤)

There are some special tracks in here I treasure very dearly, and I’m happy they found a home in this mix. Whilst selecting these tracks, I was reflecting on the energies of spring, that shifting feeling of shedding off the last of winter’s introspection, whilst reaching forward into summer’s vibrant energy. I hope the mix provides a dreamy and expansive landscape for drifting away 🦋🍃🌤

a. My name is Ian Baxter and I produce music as DJ Birdbath and am currently based in the sunny top of New Zealand's south island.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
Not as such, I just tried to go with my first impulse for the song choice.

q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?
I reckon it's best enjoyed in a comfy place with some headphones maybe on a bus or train.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
Definitely the pile of comfy pillows a friend made covers for from an old wall hanging. I've been making lots of music and this mix whilst nestled amongst them.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
I'm always working on bits of music and samples and am very excited for my EP to come out on APPX: ( @appendixfiles ) on the 24th of March.

"I recorded this in preparation for the final Satori event before an undetermined hiatus. Since being part of Satori - a deep listening event in Tokyo - I have felt myself grow as a listening DJ and it feels quite sad to be saying goodbye to the team, many of whom have been with us from the start. 

Unlike most of my mixes which are a mix of vinyl and data, this is solely data, simply because I am downsizing and have sold many of my records. A full-data mix is very different from a mix of formats or even just a vinyl mix. More effects can be applied and I find that I used more recent music, much which has an electronic zing to it. But as it is the last event for while, I picked some tracks I’d not played for years - Raime, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Jessica Ekomane to name a few. This is a mix for co:clear in tribute to Satori, in the hope that maybe one day y’all can experience each other f2f, be that Asia, Europe or somewhere in between xx"
