Sound Transitions is back with another excellent EP for your listening enjoyment. This one comes to us compliments of Bristol's own Quelaan in the form of the Glass Projections EP. It's six tracks of deeply groovy house filled with soulful chords, sliced vocal samples, and enough low end to rattle any big room.

Composed of three originals and three inventive remixes from Roaming Data, Hannd, and Phasmid, the Glass Projections EP is a snapshot of where house music is right now and where it may be headed in the future. While there are certainly nods to the past (especially in some of the excellently chopped vocal samples used), the music here is forward-thinking, interesting, and timeless. Quelaan creates a dark, steamy world that is surely informed by our own, but has the patina of something new, original, and exciting. This one is a must-have. Having previously released music via Soundway Records and Five Easy Pieces, producer XOA (AKA Nick Tyson) caught the ears of Gilles Peterson, DJ Mag, Boiler Room, Red Bull, XLR8R (and more) with his use of rich analogue sonics, steeped in the electronic sounds of London’s musical underbelly, blending vibrant textures and cosmic melodies, melding afrobeat and jazz sensibilities with house and techno. 

XOA has a new direction and meaning: hard hitting Jazz with big analogue electronic sounds. The focus is on the playing, with little to no programming on the tracks, but with a lot of care and focus on the individual sounds, drawing on Tyson’s experience as an electronic music producer. 
In Tyson’s words “we just wanted and needed to get together to write, play, share time and create, and I wanted each member to reach out at different points and express themselves’. The record is a result of that.

Instilled with a new revitalised energy and focus, the group channel deep interstellar visions throughout their music, incorporating celestial arpeggios, haunting motifs, acid infused bass lines and driving electronics throughout the record. The EP’s title track ‘Program Change’ (due for release 18th March) serves as the first single, immersing the listener in an warp speed kaleidoscopic journey through space and time, giving a taste of what to expect from the EP. Second offering ‘World Tour’ (due for release 22nd April) sees the group unite with fast-rising Bristolian MC Gardna, who brings his vocals to the scattered drum patterns and drifting pads, punctuated by some truly phenomenal saxophone riffs. Feeding on their newly-forged collaborative energy, XOA have created an urgent and enthralling record - one which perfectly captures the lightning-rod tenacity of their live performances.

Dublin duo Long Island Sound present their first ever full-length “Lost Connection LP”, a dreamy and dynamic expedition of breaks, electro, techno and house.

Since breaking through in 2019, Dublin DJ/Producer duo Long Island Sound have cemented their roots in the Dublin scene. With an impressive back catalogue spanning the likes of Remmah, Body Fusion and Fabric Presents compilations, they now step up for their first full-length on their Signs Of Space imprint with the genre-bending “Lost Connection LP”. The album is brimming with emotion, seamlessly fluctuating through moments of intense euphoria, solitude and melancholy.

‘Ataria’ opens the record with airy synths and rippling, phased percussion. A deep UK twinged sub bass is introduced with a subtle burst, soon followed by gated vocals and crisp highs that transcend listeners into the album’s euphoric space. Truly embodying the theme of SOS productions is the celestial ‘Dusk’. Using stretched out reverbs, a hypnotic riff and washed out percussion, the cut is eerie yet beautifully ethereal. ‘Fragments’ takes the title as the most energetic track on the record - a wild SH101 jam with a brooding bassline and breakbeat elements. Gliding leads glitter above the chaos, creating a deep and textural stomper. Next up is ‘Every Time I See Your Face’. While romantic and dreamy, this is undoubtedly an old-school hip-hop & electro-influenced cut. The kick and bass inject a grooving element, with a vocoder effect on the vocals and atmospheric percussion again inducing that element of space.

On the flip is ‘Power’ - a bassline-driven production that ignites a swift change of pace. Dubby stabs combine with scattered percussion to create this 8-minute roller. The record crescendos with the trancey, techno-inspired ‘Turbulence’. Rhythmic chords bounce around driving percussion and distorted samples to create the record’s apex. Rounding off is title track ‘Lost Connection’ - an ambient, modular piece that uses sequences and layers to create the sensation of drifting before culminating in one final moment of relief as the album draws to a close.

It's a 140bpm acid banger that pulls at all the right nostalgic heart strings... Every time I play it, people ask for the track ID. Brian's music is fun, cheeky and energetic. The stripped down productions are perfect for the club, and Brian's willingness to take risks with cheeky ideas for tracks consistently bring smiles to the dance floors. Shawn Carter also came in hot with a euphoric electro remix of Dora to add some extra PLUR to the release. Huge love to Brian on this incredible project, and hope you all can feel some of the good vibes from these awesome tunes :)

A Muted Radiance II

Caught somewhere between environmental sound studies and surrealist sonic architecture, Japanese producer Ken Sugai helps mark the 30th release of Field Records with an ambitious new album. Tone River is the product of a year’s intensive work between artist and label, created in part to examine the relationship between Japan and the Netherlands with regard to water management.

While its doors to the Western world were closed during the 17th and 18th centuries, Japan kept abreast of Western science via a Dutch trade post in the bay of Nagasaki. When the country changed from a feudal society to a modern democracy through the turn of the 19th century, Dutch engineers lent their expertise to large-scale water management projects. One of the most prestigious projects of the time was the Tone River, which stretches 322 kilometers across Honshu, Japan’s largest island.

For this project, Sugai travelled to three points across the Tone River and used regular, binaural and underwater microphones to record environmental sounds, seeking to express the change in landscape of the river in its flow into the Pacific Ocean. On Tone River, these varied recordings are interspersed and juxtaposed with Sugai’s distinctive take on synthesis, where raw and precisely sculpted textures and tones interact in stark, neutral space. This conceptually rigorous, yet beguiling and free-flowing record glides between the elemental and hyper-synthetic in a flexible exploration of sound and story.

This project is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tokyo, Japan.

Israeli-born Berlin based producer and DJ Omer debuts his first release on Cocktail d'Amore with two offerings of celestial house. The title cut blends the sounds of the east with an immediately seductive atmosphere of bright melodies leaving the listener plenty of room to be transfixed through it's entirety. “Dust” dives deeper to reveal a more melancholic mood built on a symphony of lush pads and swirling metallic percussion. On remix duties are the wonderfully quirky Estonian duo Ajukaja & Andrevski who deliver an oddball re-imagining which sends the original into outer space as it gently builds to sparkling fervor only heard on the outskirts of galaxies. Rounding out the release is Man Power with an acid tinged burner which explodes into en excitement of live percussion and pads leaving any dance floor in complete ecstasy.
