To coincide with their 15-year anniversary, Extrawelt are quietly proud to release Extra Welt Hits. A collectors box, which covers every album and period from their dominant yet enigmatic history as one of Germany’s most highly regarded electronic acts. Etched into the 4-piece vinyl box-set is a 15-track playlist which takes us back to the dawn of their beautiful “Extra World”. 

Extra Welt Hits is a time capsule drenched in the essence of the act’s DNA. Accentuated by newly-remastered tracks that serve their ever-evolving, clever and out-of-the-box sound, each recording spills into the next with sonic precision. From the monumental masterpiece of the album’s opening track ‘Ferneh’, through to the “One- way ticket to oblivion, please” hits of ‘Soopertrack’ and ‘Titelheld’, the listener is left captivated. And, because it’s what they do best, the destruction and artful reconstruction echoed through their shows are also present. These are beamed out in the exclusive live versions of ‘Zu Fuss’, ‘Dark Side Of My Room’ and ‘Herzstück’. Recorded in Tokyo, Paris and at the Fusion Festival, these bent, broken and rebuilt icons prove once again why they are one of the most influential live-acts of the semi- underground. That live-act—a futuristic symphony of dance music—is both undefinable and strays well past the norm. Their chance to manipulate their creations in a flow of measured spontaneity, it continues to leave permanent impressions on audiences everywhere. The result is an experience focussed on purism with great care in presenting the deepest core of their craft, in essence; exactly what sums up their musical galaxy. 

It was never the acts plan to release a best-of album, especially at the unusual 15- year mark, rather, it rolled into motion naturally as a way to immortalise the victory of being around so long (in a scene where the shelf life for most artists doesn't last much longer than an album or two, fifteen years is something of a triumph). With that, Extrawelt invite those that were there from the start to join them in getting a kick out of being “officially mature”. And for those that were not, to have the chance to hear their story up until now, like it’s never been told before. And yes, while the listener may have outlived many of the clubs which first introduced them, it is unlikely that anyone has outgrown this brave, intangible and absorbing music—one that is all theirs, but all ours, too. A sound which is still as relevant today as ever it was; feeding the older generation’s electronic-itch while also enabling the new ones to go totally nuts.

11 years after their last EP on Break New Soil, we are psyched to welcome back two very good friends of ours and true heavyweights of the international Techno-community: Extrawelt return to Break New Soil with three magic tracks that once again showcase their versatility and unique artistic approach to making music. "Jetzt Neu: Alles Wie Früher“ is a fresh take on the energy that made us all fall in love with Extrawelt in the first place. Arne and Wayan were not even sure about releasing this belter as they don't want to repeat themselves - but luckily for all of us we could convince them. „Knackfrisch“ comes along fresh as a cucumber: A rhythmic powerhouse full of clever edits and tricks. It seems to constantly accelerate just to make sure it'll win the race against itself. Equipped with a massive kick, funky hihats and smashing percussions it aimes to set dancefloors on fire. Last but not least, „Treuepunkt“ is definitely one for the soul. Deep and driving with syncopated rhythms and lovely synthwork that is topped with a bleepy melody that could come from Detroit rather than from Hamburg. We hope you enjoy this triumphant return to our beloved label as much a we do!

It's a perfectly co-arranged marriage between the power of spoken words, a strong vocal reach and impeccable production work, which results in a musical output that is highly danceable, endlessly refreshing and doesn’t lack its fair share of creativity, next to finding its way onto labels like Correspondant, Me Me Me, 2MR and Crosstown Rebels.

Following their hugely well-received, refreshingly outlandish debut EP for Phantasy, Israeli club outsiders Red Axes return to the label with another three-track delight of leftfield dance entitled ‘Sound Test’.

Debuting on Phantasy in 2018, ‘Sipoor’ by Red Axes was massive. The release received critical acclaim, not to mention heavy support within the club realm from DJs like Call Super, Jennifer Cardini, Ewan Pearson, Fort Romeau, Massimiliano Pagliara, Chloe, and many more.

Highly soughtafter by those who’ve heard Erol Alkan unleash it in recent months, ‘Sound Test’ kickstarts Phantasy Sound’s 2019 - a rolling tool for a dance floor sliding into another dimension, constructed around a dramatic, numeric countdown. A minimal, skeletal build builds (and builds!) throughout to one of the most out-there breakdowns in recent rave-blotted memory, as the Axes slowly but surely rebuild their house to even more outlandish new proportions. Ten, nine, eight, seven...

‘Shabak Shalom’ quickly snatches the record back from outer space and drags it deep into the basement, zoning in on the gritter, strobe-ready sound that defines the duo’s most club-ready work. All of the Axes’ weapons of choice are deployed as unusually as per usual; militant drums, battered electronics, fucked- frequencies, wiry post-punk guitar lines and lovingly drowned traditional instruments blend to create their own special, slightly-menacing interpretation of hi-NRG.

Finally, on the unapologetically sprawling and immediately effective closing number, ‘Kookoo Papa’, Red Axes demonstrate their inherent talent, if proof were ever needed, of conjuring rolling, simmering tension in otherworldly shades. Those who enjoyed the cartoonish motor FX of ‘Teroof’ will be delighted to find themselves found into an even wackier race this time round, hitting on the origins of Chicago jack, acid meltdowns and screeching no-wave.

Berlin techno icon Ellen Allien marks the launch of her brand new (and aptly named) music label, UFO Inc, with a two-track EP that drops on January 28.

Ahead of the release, Mixmag is pleased to share Ellen Allien's lead single off the EP, 'UFO' - a track that serves as "a mediator between earth and heaven, i.e. the concrete dancefloor and a feeling of transcendental rapture - the kind of track that lifts you up from where you dance and takes you away to new spheres." 

Filled with playful texture, rotund synths and acid-tinged euphoria, 'UFO' is considered "the definite UFO Inc. manifesto: rough music from and for the here and now, opening a pathway into the greater unknown."

This uplifting and cosmic slammer has been on heavy rotation by Ellen since summer 2018 and is bound to continue to make a considerable impression on dancefloor everywhere.

With „Solarplex“ Matthias Schuell presents a dark and energetic club track with a memorable hook on Ritter Butzke Studio that has the potential to leave marks on international dance floors. Dahu interprets this massive track with a more rhythmic and bassy notion and sets the melody as a percussive element. Baime approaches the track more avantgarde with screaming synth sounds and a pitch distorted melody.


The second track “Walpurgis Night” lives up to it's name. What can be more compelling than one dancefloor-minded production force behind the controls? Two, of course - as is evident from label chief Simina Grigoriu’s joint effort alongside longtime collaborator and Taiwanese-Chinese techno powerhouse BB Deng. Title track Double Trouble casts an immersive spell, binding the listener into a punchy drum and relentless bassline grip. Cocoon Recordings has been founded in the year 2000 as a part of the Cocoon Music Event GmbH. Sven Väth has initiated Cocoon Recordings in order to complete the Cocoon platform as a supporting tool for young artists in Electronic Music. The label philosophy is as simple as demanding: helping young producers and DJs to release their music without depending on Major Label structures. The releases can mainly be assigned to the genres Techno and House.

Cocoon Recordings as a label and Sven Väth as an artist stand for the use of vinyl as sound carrier, also in the future. Admittedly, the Digital Division of Cocoon Recordings has also been set up in 2008 and the numbers of downloads are indeed enjoyable. However, the label's focus is on vinyl, now and in the future. In order to complete the range of services that Cocoon Recordings offers, the publishing company Cocoon Publishing was founded in 2010.
