This is a piano improvisation conceived around the Walt Whitman poem "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking"  First Stanza is attached. This piece is meant to accompany the recitation of the first stanza of the poem.

Amazing Grace verdankt seine Entstehung einem Schlüsselerlebnis seines Autors John Newton, der Kapitän eines Sklavenschiffs war. Nachdem er am 10. Mai 1748 in schwere Seenot geraten und nach Anrufung des Erbarmens Gottes gerettet worden war, behandelte er zunächst die Sklaven menschlicher. Nach einigen Jahren gab er seinen Beruf sogar ganz auf, wurde stattdessen Geistlicher und trat gemeinsam mit William Wilberforce für die Bekämpfung der Sklaverei ein.
Die heute weltweit bekannte Melodie, die sogenannte New Britain, tauchte erstmals in einem Gesangbuch von 1831, dem Virginia Harmony auf. Sie ist pentatonisch und soll ursprünglich auf amerikanische oder englische Wurzeln zurückgehen, wird aber auch James P. Carrell und David S. Clayton zugeschrieben. Der ursprünglich zur Melodie gesungene Originaltext ist heute verloren. Der heute üblicherweise gesungene Text von John Newton wird gelegentlich auch mit einer anderen Melodie gesungen, der 1958 in Kentucky entstandenen Old Regular Baptist.

In ihrer Nachwirkung besonders bedeutsam ist die Harmonisierung, wie sie im Gesangbuch Southern Harmony von 1835 geboten wird. Die für dieses Hymnenbuch charakteristische Setzweise, in der die Hauptmelodie in der Mittelstimme liegt und von jeweils einer darüber bzw. darunter liegenden, leiser gesungenen Stimme begleitet wird, findet sich bis heute in US-amerikanischer Musik für Vokaltrios und wurde besonders bekannt durch den Stil der Andrews Sisters.

“My Silver Unicycle” began as the first track Blankets and I made together in 2009. It was originally planned to be an instrumental track since I was tired of recording vocals and wanted to make an instrumental set that combined neopsychedic rock with hip hop. “Love is Called to All,” which I released as an open collaboration track and David Lee Louthan recently added vocals to, was the second instrumental track Blankets and I recorded for the set. I decided to add vocals to “My Silver Unicycle” approximately 3 years ago, probably after completing “Let’s Do It (All Over Again)” with Weighty Tree. I never released the track because I decided I wanted to focus on releasing collaborative tracks with people active in the  SoundCloud community. Eventually I couldn’t access the original stems to “My Silver Unicycle” due to old DAW issues and this track just sat there in limbo. I decided to release this track now because I can’t seem to complete any new tracks. Lol. So there ya go. 

The photo is taken from a party I had at my old house. I used to invite all my musician and artists friends over and we would play live music, paint and draw on the wall, read poetry, and cook together. It was fun.  

Huge blessing to Blankets for all the music we made together, a lot of which still has never been released on any platform. And big thanks to Russell Sinfield at the Chaos Cookhouse for mixing and mastering this track on the quick style with only an instrumental stem and 3 of my vocal stems. It was originally supposed to be lo-fi any ways.

The Dance of Zalongo
June 2018
During the Souliote War in Greece, December 1803, the Souliotes began evacuating Souli after their defeat by the forces of the local Ottoman-Albanian ruler, Ali Pasha. During the evacuation, a small group of about 60 Souliot women and their children were trapped by Ali's troops in the mountains of Zalongo in Epirus. In order to avoid capture and enslavement, the women threw their children first and then themselves off a steep cliff, committing suicide.  According to the legend, they jumped down the precipice one after the other while singing and dancing. 
The name, Dance of Zalango, also refers to a popular Greek dance-song commemorating the event.  I was moved by the story and the dance song to create this music.
