DJ Sodeyama’s murky alias The People in Fog is up next for a very special number. The DJ/producer has been active since the 90s, reshaping his home city, extensively touring the globe, releasing music, founding record labels (Arpa) and toying with different incarnations of his palette under a few different names. The People In Fog is one such project, founded a decade ago as license to lean into his more disco and house inclinations, a means of connecting with a lighter penchant for Chicago-style and Balearic rhythms. It’s a manifestation that’s given the world several first-rate releases like debut album A Ray of Light (2013), Album: 1977 (2021) and this year’s Too Much Knobs and Cables. His whistle-stop promo tour of Japan for that latest release has been whipping up plenty of shifting grooves and phase distortions, and delivering that fresh take on sound to IRL crowds in his native land. For the rest of us, the nine-tracker’s a perfect source for summer anthems: a fuzzy, analog patchwork of synths and low-end bass. Batumi-born, Berlin-based DJ/Producer Nicole has been instrumental in the evolution of Tbilisi’s role as axis for music and politics. Her earliest ventures in sonic creation saw her attend music school as a child and drum in a band, followed by a pivot into electronic music as half of teenage duo Body Thrills. It was 2018 that she truly emerged solo as a talent to watch on the Georgian scene, with a Boiler Room performance at Bassiani to celebrate its reopening following civilian protests against the government’s shutdown of cultural spaces. And with the threat of authoritarian ideology looming once more, her kind of energy is perhaps more important than ever. Nicole’s sound represents the best of what Georgia has to offer, a free and open enthusiasm for life where creativity reigns and anything is possible. Witty minimal with a generous measure of acid squelches and positive funk, these tunes are a mirror to the dancefloors she plays on. Germany-based Natalie Robinson is a champion for soulful house, weaving together the threads of her American/Ghanaian upbringing with her clubland one and bringing her identity as a young queer artist to the fore. In seven short years, she’s gone from apprentice to high-flying selector, firing up crowds at some of Berlin’s most esteemed cultural spaces and leaving a trail of sweaty dancefloors in her wake. Through her many bookings, a narrative line has emerged in her work, a dialogue with the energy on any given night but also with herself, in which she constantly strives to stay authentic and true to her roots. It’s a kind of reverence to the music that made her too: “when I weave in tribal percussion or gospel-inspired vocals, I’m paying homage to the communal spirit that shaped house from the beginning.” And so it goes on, Bassiani Podcast 277 carries that flame onward. This one’s an hour-long number with all of her usual bells and whistles, a smooth and joyful exploration of house, r’n’b breaks and other syncretic moods, groove-fuelled tunes with a spring in their step.
