Avenue Red is proud to present a long-time favourite artist of ours, a man who for over 20 years has been lurking in the darkest, most shadowy lairs of the deep subterranean underground... enter German musical mastermind Stephan Laubner, better known to most down here as STL, also as Lunatik Sound System. Located somewhere amid the Harz mountains in northern Germany, he is well known as a talented and vastly innovative producer, especially in experimental electronic, ambient and deep, dub techno circles. But almost nobody, even in these tightest and narrowest of niches has ever heard a DJ mix from this rather mysterious figure (aside from a totally out of the blue RA Podcast in 2014). Today, that changes, as he has decided to unleash some real fury right here on Avenue Red.

His debut release was called "Portside Waves" and was the 13th release on Perlon in 1999, with this spooky, insanely hypnotic track coming with some bizarre infinite locked-groove loops on one side - the flipside featuring Ricardo Villalobos & Martin Schopf under their Ric Y Martin guise. This paved the way for a discography that, at time of writing, totals approximately 100 releases. As well as being the mainstay of his Something label (link below), his releases are scattered across the likes of Smallville Records, echospace [detroit], Echocord, Silent Season, Assemble Music, Phonica White, The Untold Stories and many more. We highly respect and recommend a visit to his hand-rolled Something Records website too, which is packed with soul and contains some amazing secrets waiting to be found.

This mix is a live DJ performance riddled with trippy effects and unusual mixing techniques. A mix like no other. It is alien, beautiful, strange, venomous, intoxicating and downright awe-inspiring, as with everything this rare Midas has touched.

"Since a while ago I have been in contact with Pierre AKA Caillou. His new label is Chateau Chépère on which I have an upcoming EP. We chatted about music and mixing and shared a few links to each other's publications (he made 2 Avenue Red Podcast episodes: 136 and 172). He was sending me a link to an Avenue Red mix he was doing and so I - or we - had the idea to send a mix from me to AR as well.

Since most of the music I make is usually within the studio I am not really a DJ - more a production head. Nevertheless, sometimes I dig out those old vinyls and record a tape. The mix provided was done pretty much out of the feel and almost desire to play some records again. I don't do this every day. I keep that for special times or at meetings with some friends or family. Actually this session turned out to be very much full of life and energy. I wanted to keep with a certain flow. Tightness was not the best. However I think it is still enjoyable. Not just a dead mix, but something coming from taking the action to create something enjoyable, at least for my side. For me the music and the mixing often is something that belongs together. I mean a dub techno mix probably would not have been done this way. Growing up listening to electronic music being played by his big brother in their shared bedroom, Yazoo, Jean Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode and Acid House soon found its way through the speakers.
Heavily influenced by Kraftwerk, B12, R&S, As One, those early Warp releases, and a love of Detroit techno, it was invertible the leap into production would be made.
A 2019 debut on Where We Met, and further releases on We’re Going Deep, Móatún 7, Intellitronic Bubble, Fourier Transform, ReKabs music is intelligent and effortlessly deep.


Miles Atmospheric
One of the true unsung heroes of UK techno, Miles Sagnia aka Miles Atmospheric, is as much a mesmerising presence behind the DJ booth as he is in the studio. Through his richly emotive releases, he weaves seamless stories out of the deepest house or the most spacious techno. He is equally at home going deep on his own Atmospheric Existence label or sending out uniquely soulful techno missives for labels such as Applied Rhythmic Technology, Firescope or Detroit's Aesthetic Audio. Last year he released Miles Away on Chicago's Finale Sessions, his second double long-player and the follow-up to his 2014 debut LP – Aeration. This year he debuts another new alias 'Quadra', with close friend Charlie Tear, a LIVE duo / production outfit.
As a DJ for over 20 years, Miles enjoys a dedicated following no matter whether he is delivering sets of muscular late night techno, or feel-good Sunday-afternoon house. Given the choice, he will straddle the divide to create something unpredictable yet hypnotic, laced with as much energy as there is soul. From London to Paris to Shanghai, he cuts a unique presence in the Dj booth.

Phil is also the man behind Leeds’ only house plant and records shop – a brand new concept to compliment Leeds’ bustling, vibrant and all-inclusive creative arts culture. Plant & Deck, based within The Imaginarium, 3 Church Walk, Leeds (off Kirkgate), will be open for business on Saturday 8th October – pop in and have a browse from 11am til 7pm…

It's a Dub ting!

It isn't easy to describe the sound of dub music in philosophical terms because it is a subjective experience that can be interpreted differently by different people. However, using echo and reverb in dub music creates a sense of space and openness, reflecting philosophical ideas about the nature of existence and the vastness of the universe. The heavy use of bass and electronic instruments is also a reflection of modern philosophical ideas about technology and its role in shaping our world experience. Ultimately, the philosophical significance of dub music will depend on the individual listener and their interpretation of the music.
This set may pose more questions than answers, but some things are clear. It's a creative and masterful journey into dub.

Elistratov is a DJ and collector of electronic music and a supporter of exclusively vinyl sound. About:
Protect, short for "We Must Protect This House" is a call to action. To protect this house is to protect your inner spirit. As a registered nurse and mental health advocate, Protect is dedicated to a life of service on & off the decks. He is the co-founder of the Saint Peterburg-based dance crew & label SPS Cxllective. The Cxllective is focused on helping elevate the Florida house & dance community. It's important to them that the culture is continually pushed forward so that it may evolve & survive. Although raised in a household of junglists & techno heads, Protect has gravitated towards the world of minimal. He also runs a series called "Minimally Invasive", founded in 2019. This mix submitted for Deep Electronics is meant to showcase the diversity in sounds that Protect brings to the table.
