I recorded this track live to DAT in 1994 using only a TR-727, TR-808, and TR-909 as instruments.  I'm pretty sure I used a DOD Supra-distortion pedal and a Yamaha SPX-90 II for effects, and everything was sequenced from the drum machines.

I didn't have a studio of my own at the time, so I schlepped what I could fit in my hands and a backpack to the computer music lab at Carnegie-Mellon University.  What came out of one night of jamming is a group of three minimal techno tracks (minimal in the absolute sense, not the 2000s era clicks/cuts/etc).  I think this one is the strongest of them.  We released them all along with another one on Orbitrecords in 1996 in an obscure EP called .x09 :fzz:ep.  There aren't too many of those out there.

We're getting the band back together!  I recorded Tickertape and Mayday after revamping my studio workflow, and I asked my friends Chaircrusher and Perkowitz to remix the title track.  Chaircrusher released this EP digitally on his Cornwarning label in 2009.  Enjoy!

Back to dance music with this one.  I always liked the way 90s rave tunes would sample a chord and then play a melody with them.  So I fired up the old 1990s sampler and found some of those chords to mix in with a rolling beat.  

This track actually began with an idea for hi-hats that is barely audible in the final mix.  There is a hat sound in the background run through a resonant filter with an envelope and LFO.  That plus the Juno bass line was where I started.

Codebase - Falling Bricks

This track grew out of experiments trying to replicate a certain stuttery sound from popular music in the early 1980s.  I used gated chords from a Jupiter-6 along with a triggered portamento sound from a Moog Source for the main melodic sounds.  There's also some PPG and Juno-60 thrown in there.  The bass line is my favorite bass machine, the Oberheim SEM.
