160 & Beyond 19-Aug-2023 Sub FM

Seeing as Limerick is the 1st Irish City of Culture this year and seeing as I now live abroad and sometimes miss the place, I thought I'd make a piece of music dedicated to a city that, to me, has always been a city of culture. To prove that point, this track bears influence from a number of people I saw / heard performing in Limerick City while living there between 1997 and 2010. It also reflects the diversity of the Limerick music scene of that time, taking in hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul and of course Drum & Bass / Jungle. 

Quite a few experiences in Limerick lead me to the sound sources that were used in the making of this track - a radio show called "The Vortex" which broadcast on Wired FM in the mid to late nineties, the $kint night with Skinny Boy Jaz and Eric Fitz which used to run at Costello's on Thursday nights from 1997 - 1999, the famous painting of 'Jhelisa' on the wall of the dancefloor in that club (is it still there?), two shows hosted by the Limerick Jazz Society (Charles Gayle playing in the Limerick City Gallery and Julian Joseph at the Castletroy Park Hotel), a DJ competition held in the University of Limerick sometime in 1998 and of course, the Nu Killa Beats nights which I was involved with alongside a lot of other Limerick D&B Dj's from 2000 - 2010. I won't be more specific than that about the samples used, but it should be a bit of fun for any music nerds to try pick out the musical references :-) 

There's a real everyday Limerick sound in the mix too - the bells of the Redemptorists church - a sound you can hear daily in the city and so they kinda tie in the various other influences and references from different times and spots that I mentioned previously.

Of course I should also mention the excellent Music Technology course I attended in UL (University of Limerick) - I also got a fair wedge of culture into me that year as well.

Just to introduce myself - it's Code from Subtle Audio Recordings. I'm based in Limerick, Ireland. My first love musically is D&B and Jungle but I like and play Techno / Dubstep / Electronica too.

I started my label 'Subtle Audio' in 2005. The aim of the operation is to release interesting and experimental breakbeat D&B.
