Deer hold a very special place in human hearts. Most of us think of Disney’s doe-eyed Bambi, but these ethereal creatures appear in cave paintings dating back 17,000 years and have featured in all kinds of myths and fairy tales for centuries since. For humans they typically symbolize strength and grace, but they’re vital to keeping the natural world healthy too. Deer maintain an environmental equilibrium and provide food for some of the world’s most epic hunters like jaguars, wolves and lynx. Human interference through hunting, habitat destruction and climate change throws everything off balance and can cause whole ecosystems to collapse. If plants die off, there’s less food for the deer and less deer for the predators. If the carnivores die off, deer overpopulation and disease can become an issue. Black Barrel returns to Dispatch Recordings with a bang with the “Play EP”. Four varied and eclectic tracks packed with his distinctive production flavour. Easily recognisable by his vocal sampling style and quick edits with precision percussion, the Russian roller brings the funk every time.

The dub inspired “Whatah Bang” sees Black Barrel’s glitched out take on dubwise. The heavy hitting title track “Play” contrasts bright atmospherics with an infectious, growling bass. “Somebody Serious” matches serious bass modulation with a hard stepping drum line and “Burn Up” slowly builds and twists through rumble bass and spaced out breaks.
