First taking interest as a sound enthusiast, Montreal's Jean-Patrice Remillard began exploring electronic music in earnest by the early 1990s, teaching himself how to produce and manipulate sounds with software and hardware. Pheek now finds himself releasing amongst his idols for such renowned labels as Richie Hawtin's M_NUS, France's Telegraph, Denmark's Tic Tac Toe or Germany's Contexterrior, gaining particular recognition for the unique quality and texture of his sounds. Nourished by his experiences and hoping to construct his own community of likeminded musicians, Pheek founded the Archipel Musique Canada netlabel in 2004 that is now firmly ensconced in the international minimal techno and tech-house scene.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I’ve been a part of it for as long as I’ve lived here, which is 10 years now. Before that I was working in nightclubs & for promoters in Miami, my hometown, before I moved to NYC to go to music school. The music communities I’ve been a part of here have been my life & family for the past decade. I don’t really know that I can do anything else but work in music. I’ve had a few different music jobs throughout the last decade, but currently I work at the record label RVNG Intl. which has been my musical home for the last 6 years. There I project manage records and manage artists. I also run my own label with Tristan Arp called Human Pitch, and run another label and party series with my pals Enayet, K Wata and rrao called SLINK.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix is my love letter to summer, my favorite season. Just as I was about to begin pulling tracks, I came across a beautiful book called Summer Solstice by Nina MacLaughlin. It’s a heartwarming essay exploring the meaning of summer in our lives. A perfect and inspirational coincidence that this book and I would find each other for this mix.

In this mix is a full summer day and all of its possibilities….Waking up to a balmy summer morning, sun bouncing off leaves from vines desperately trying to crawl through your apartment window. A cold shower to rinse off the dewy night’s sweat. It’s hot out. A stroll outside, thick humidity filling your lungs. A car ride to the beach with friends, windows down. Nothing beats a summer ride to the ocean; the perfect amount of time to listen to a mix. A BBQ in the park; a loud PA system blaring summer’s ecstatic joy. Sunset…an endless pastel New York sky that stops everyone in their tracks, no matter how many summer days they’ve seen come to a close. You feel cute, you’re kissing your newly blossomed summer crush. Is this the best day ever? Is this summer better than the last? An evening out with friends. What’s the move? Too many. You're unstoppable. Stumbling into bed, full moon so bright your cheap window shades don’t do shit; but it’s ok, you lay there and reminisce on a beautiful summer Saturday. “I have so many more left”….You wake up abruptly the next morning to a knock at the door. Fall is here.

This is a long-overdue homage to one of the best house labels ever conceived. At only ten releases long, and almost entirely created by both The Timewriter and Terry Lee Brown Jr., Driftwood hit the mark every single time with some of the smoothest deep house around. 

It took me quite a while to complete the series, not to mention a good amount of money, but the hunt was worth every penny. I've owned the entire series for about six years now, but just now am finally getting around to compiling a mix of only driftwood tracks. 

Total respect goes to the Driftwood label, Jean F. Cochois AKA The Timewriter, Norman Feller AKA Terry Lee Brown Jr., Hakan Lidbo, Robi Uppin, and Jonathan Axelsson. Special thanks goes to my friend Travis Wolf for originally pointing this label out to me back in 2002 and for kicking off an obsessed passion for this Imprint.

Eric Cloutier - Driftwood Records Mix

Because of the current global situation, it's been awhile since Space Ghost and friends have been able to host their monthly dance party Open Soul. While everyone is stuck at home, the Open Soul crew have decided to pick up where their mix series had left off 2 years ago, starting with Vol. 3 by Space Ghost.

This mix holds a few classic selections from the dance night, as well as some more recent finds. Expect an obscure mix of Boogie and Disco mostly from the 80s. These songs are for sweaty nights on a packed dance floor at Starline Social Club. We hope to be back doing what we love one day soon!

OUTERVIEWS is a limited monographic series – the first episode is on the late piano player, composer and arranger Harry Whitaker.

HARRY WHITAKER
Harry Whitaker is a piano player, producer and arranger born in Pensacola, Florida who began playing piano at age 5. He grew up in Detroit, soaking up the bluesy sensibility of Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, and Hank Jones. Harry moved to New York City in 1961, playing nights and weekends until his first long-term gig with R&B star Lloyd Price. He landed various road jobs, including stints with Eugene McDaniel and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He spent four years with vibist Roy Ayers in the group “Ubiquity,” for which he composed the famous tune “We Live In Brooklyn, Baby”. Next he became Roberta Flack’s musical director, a position he held for nine years. Since then, he’s worked with such artists as Stephanie Mills, Carmen Lundy, Gary Bartz, and Phyllis Hyman, while director Quentin Tarantino featured his music in the film “Jackie Brown.” On Martin Luther King day of 1976, at the age of 26, Mr. Whitaker recorded “Black Renaissance – Body, Mind, and Spirit” a holy grail amongst collectors of soul-jazz and rare groove. During his later years, he recorded three more jazz piano albums for Fresh Sound Records and Smalls Records. He frequently played in various downtown New York City jazz clubs, such as Smalls, Fat Cat and Arturo’s. Harry Whitaker died on November 17 2010.
