Cold Blue - August Rain (Preview)

It took a shade under thirty months for Pure Progressive to rock past its one-hundredth release. That was time enough for the label to bring music from near enough every prog operator of note through its doors and onto floors. Penner, Barone, O’Glue, Saint-Jules, Schossow, Driftmoon, label honch Solarstone (naturally) - you name ‘em, they’ve all received their P.P. pin.

If there was any surprise to be had it was that Pure Progressive’s resisted a full-blown compilation until now. Time is time though and July 2020 sees Solarstone’s progressive progeny emphatically score that notch. At the wheelhouse of its mix/disc-deuce is none other than that flying Fin, Orkidea - a genre prognosticator himself who’s recorded for the label many a time. Notably perhaps it was ‘One Man’s Dream’ - their hundredth release, as well as his longstanding Solar-association - that saw him earmarked to mix-helm ‘PP1’. Either way he’s seized both opportunity and reins to deliver a stupendously mixed first edition - and one that brings the best of his and the label’s artistic cohort to your ears.

Orkidea’s split his edition clean down the middle, dividing it into Artist and DJ mixes, the latter of which comes with many an edge-cutter from 2020’s prog class. Yotto, Grum, Paul Thomas, gardenstate, Forerunners, Allende and a horde of others pack out its second disc’s tracklist. Collectively ‘Pure Progressive 1’ serves the clearest possible vision of what’s-currently-what in the world of prog.

What did you do during the big stay-home? Solarstone wrote himself an album - an unplanned one obviously, and one - by his own acknowledgment - he wouldn’t have gotten to write in more conventional times. ‘A lockdown album’ by any other name - not the first and undoubtedly not the last. 


‘island’ started with a thought, which was part of March and April’s global realisation that this summer was to be unlike any other. 

The cornerstone for most in hot season revolves around a trip - often to an island and of course for many, one isle in particular.  So Solarstone wrote something for those that would have to dream or recall, rather than first-hand-experience that first day on the island. The holiday literally reimagined.  

Solarstone says of the idea behind ‘island’ and its composition: “this music collection is a love letter to Ibiza, recorded between March & July when ‘the Island’ was the one place I yearned to be. Ironically, the lockdown - a unique time of rare focus for many DJ/producers - meant that I could conceive & create a record that in ‘normal’ times probably couldn’t have happened. ‘Normal’ meaning flights to catch, snatched studio time and a requisite to make ‘music to play in clubs’. These things can create studio tunnel-vision, so this is my ‘lockdown silver lining’ which represents a day and a night on ‘the island’ that so many of us miss, but will which hopefully soon return”.

Cold Blue’s ascension into a Trance superstar over the last two years has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has consistently delivered release after release for the world’s top Trance labels including Subculture, Kearnage, WAO138, Pure Trance and FSOE, as well as compiling and mixing the Subculture 2018 CD, which was a 70 minute club mix containing all his own productions. This year big releases are forthcoming on Subculture whilst there are also whispers of a debut artist album. It’s these artistic capabilities that have cemented Cold Blue as a premier league artist who has a massive part to play in shaping the future of Trance Music.
