Electrifying London-based label, Rhythm Labs, are back after their much anticipated second trip to the pressing plant. Carrying on from the success of their Polish House and UK Breakbeat fusion on RL001; the label now takes a deep dive into their home roots, as their sophomore release RL002 explores the sonics of both home-grown and international UK Garage.


Embodying the concept of Day & Night, the 6 track project journeys from AM to PM - wading through experimental two-step, right the way through to rough & ready 140BPM inspired rhythms from some of the most talented producers in the scene. Heywood Yorke’s Untitled kicks the record into gear with an ethereal, glistening, summer heater. Harry Felce then rips off the stabilizers on Wait A Minute - a bouncing, unrelenting chugger, guaranteed to make way for a screw-face or three. The A-side is rounded off by the prodigal man-on-the-ground, Toof, with one finger on Sweden’s dance scene pulse, and the others busy making the intricate UK dubstep-inspired Lost in Ritz.


Brighton-based producer Movement fills the role of Rhythm Labs family friend, with Angel 5 AM - a tenacious, brooding track that evolves into an effortless Grime-inspired Garage combination. Daffy - one of Bristol’s finest - further doubles down on the night-time mood of Side B, with Jamaican-UKG infusion Gunshot, driving the project into the intergalactic finale. Rudebwoy Marsl (AKA Dogpatrol) draws the project to a close, with a gritty, off-kilter representation of the genre. Experimental transitions and haunting vocal samples solidify the German native as a true innovator while handing listeners a preface to the ever-exciting future of UK Garage which Rhythm Labs will be continuing to champion in future releases.

Kyoto, Japan producer Stones Taro has been making waves recently with his sick blend of percussion led UK-funky, house, garage, stripped back jungle and hefty UK influence; whether it's serving up grimey shellers or screwface bassline, he always brings the heat.

The versatile producer readies four of his finest dubs yet on Cheeky Sneakers and thrusts himself into a the spotlight currently shining on Asia’s underground electronic circuit. 

‘Step Into Midnight’ skanks into the frame with it’s energetic 2-step and glitched-out vocal stabs creating a sense of grimey energy, before ‘Emotions’ begins to tug on the heartstrings with its teary-eyed, bubblegum UKG flavour; pitched vocals giving off nostalgic early 00’s wifey riddim vibes. Garage made with real tears.

The second half of the record showcases Stones Taro’s knack for jungle, previously explored most extensively on his release with Third Place. Classic R&B samples are intertwined with stripped back breaks and dubbed-out basslines on ‘Spend The Night’ to create a vibe similar to that championed by Ghost Phone, with their distinct reshaping of 90’s R&B through a contemporary lens.

‘Change The Mood’ sees us out with a score that wouldn’t sound out of place reverberating off the walls of a NYC underground as a busking drummer uses what he has to create a mood; a beauty lying within its careful repetition.

Next up on Time Is Now is a fresh cut from prolific Japanese producer Stones Taro: a kaleidoscopic EP which traverses the boundaries of genre to create something truly unique, occupying the intersection of UKG, electro, breaks and house. 

After the raging success of previous releases on Scuffed Recordings, Breaks ‘N’ Pieces and more recently on his own imprint, NC4K, the Kyoto producer makes his Time Is Now solo debut with Super Hot Floor EP. Kicking things off is the pacey, club-ready banger ‘Integration’ with stuttering synths and a driving bassline which leave little room for respite beneath a fierce breakbeat electro rhythm. On ‘Straight Walk’ Taro offers a new take on speed garage with a sharp two-step rhythm and the suggestion of acid-tinged synth stabs which lure you in before reaching their full form in high-energy intervals of 4X4. After ‘Watching You’ strips things back, the B-side brings the energy with Pulse X style stabs (‘Super Hot Floor’) and old school house-indebted Korg organ melodies a la Robin S (‘Dry Flower’).

Tight, choppy vocals, chord stabs and a timeless beat get the VA off to a flying start! 'Dont Know It' by Highrise is a tune perfectly showcasing the production aesthetic of late 90s garage. Up next is Sky Joose with 'On The Shores', a brooding yet soulful entry into the compilation, oozing with funky keys, organs and a bassline that hits as hard as the track’s full throttle beat. Flipping over onto the B side we find Johnny U-Tah who drops some classic re-pitched and time-stretched vocal business with 'Voices In My Head': a fantastic, high energy interpretation of the genre. Rolling up next is 'Melatron' by The Thunderkats, a bumpy, full-on piano infused number bringing solid garage vibes from start to finish. Completing the VA is Jay Ward and 'Everything That I Need', a sublimely executed track bristling with luscious vocals, an infectious beat and bassline to match. Get involved!

Just three years ago, the urgency of recognising Amy Dabbs’ talent was wide spread by Special Request, who included her track ‘Allure’ in his notable Splurgecore compilation. The word quickly got around, and since then her career has been a steep uphill trajectory with sets at Hor Berlin, collaborations with the likes of Coco Bryce, and countless features on BBC Radio 1 Dance.

The Bobcat Special EP demonstrates why, and proves her stylistic ambidexterity as she strays from her signature jungle-focused sound in favour of one centred on house. Through the course of four tracks, Dabbs incorporates ravey piano chords, soulful vocals and bubbly melodies into fun, strutting rhythms.

London’s Will Hofbauer has been steadily making a name for himself in the UK capital over the past few years via his own Third Place Records and Co-Select, an event series he runs alongside his collective with a focus on gender equality in DJ Culture, curating back to back sets with a balanced representation. Here we see Will mark a new milestone in his career with his production debut via New York’s HOMAGE Records, while hotly tipped producer and DJ Desert Sound Colony steps in on remix duties, known for his material on labels such as Scissor & Thread, Me Me Me, Futureboogie and of course his own Holding Hands.

The original mix of ‘Caned’ leads the release, laid out over six minutes with crunchy off- kilter drums, gritty disorted bass tones and wandering arpeggios all dynamically unfolding and evolving throughout. The Desert Sound Colony Remix follows next (seeing early support in from Bradley Zero, Gilles Peterson and Tristan Da Cunha), the fellow London-based artist stamps his own mark on things with a UKG tinged vibe via heavily swung drums, heady synth flutters and a menacing bass line all weaved together amongst the shuffled groove.

‘Whiplash’ follows next, fusing choppy amen breaks and bumpy broken drums alongside bubbling synths and an infectious vocal hook before ‘Rocks Off’ rounds out the release, this time round embracing a raw 4/4 approach rhythmically while a stab- led bass line, vacillating resonant synths and airy string sequences further fuel the murky, hypnotic groove.
