NULLPTR never fails. Since emerging in 2016 with the Optical LP, Eddie Symons’ project has become a byword for top-draw contemporary electro productions. After triumphantly returning to Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit with 2020’s Future World full-length, NULLPTR follows that album up with a new quartet of machine-funk slammers. Striking a balance between highwire, twitchy rhythm programming and some deft textural work, the Terminus EP demonstrates exactly why the NULLPTR name is so respected in the world of electro.

The first half here almost showcases the two sides of the NULLPTR sound in microcosm. Opening track ‘Connected’ zips along like one of the racers from a Wip3out game. The 808s are all booming breakbeats and hissing-piston hats, with a jittery synth bassline nipping in and out of the spaces left vacant by the drums. Atop these swirl eerie keyboard pads, the reverb from them draping across the rest of the instruments like fog above a city. By contrast, following cut ‘Mesospheric Cruise’ is the yin to ‘Connected’s yang. Where its predecessor was tense and coiled, this lilting number is expansive and open like a primetime Virginia joint - though the point where the wistful house pads strip back to foreground the twinkle-toed electro beat still has a pleasing crunch to it.

The B-side of Terminus serves dystopian snap from the off. Genre masters Drexciya are invoked by ‘Syndicate’. The needle-gun bassline here turns itself inside-out across these five minutes, and all the while the tune is laced with some evocative shadow-realm synth pads. A similar energy courses through the EP’s closing title-track, a cut which also brings into play a booming four-to-the-flour that gives it an unstoppable sense of forward-motion. Like ‘Connected’ and ‘Mesospheric Cruise’ - indeed, like all of the NULLPTR material that Central Processing Unit has brought us down the years - these jams will sound positively devilish when deployed in a dark basement.

This week we welcome S. English to the series. This seasoned Austin-based producer's work has been regularly featured on many of the Galactic Funk podcasts. He commands a catalog of sick releases across labels like Unknown Precept, LIES Records, French label Desired Records, as well as a slew of self-released material and live recordings available on his Bandcamp page that includes collabs with R. Gamble, Beau Wanzer, and others. He also forms part of the well-respected duo Corporate Park among others. To our ears, his distinctive sound takes inspiration from industrial and elements of doom and noise executed according to his vision of electronics. Don't take our word for it though. He's selected an hour of the finest cuts from his treasure chest of rare 1980s industrial cassettes. Lock in!

Novo Line – aka Berlin's algorave maestro Nat Fowler – delivers a noisy, ultramarine voyage into the depths of his archaic hardware. Clawing at the periphery between leftfield electronics and avant-garde pop, Zeit is an entirely new sonic universe, eerily familiar yet utterly uncharted. A visionary synthesist, Fowler is renowned for his productions that make use of mainly '80s equipment including vintage digital synths, discarded MIDI Hi-Tech, tape delay and even an ancient Atari ST computer. But, despite the aged technology, the result is far from nostalgic.

'Ain't That a Mess' slams in with Monica Kremidi's crooning à la Little Annie Anxiety with reeving car engines and guitar-rock static fed through a pan effect. Multilayered melodies soar on 'Stein', the pounding drums matched by gliding strings, crafting that holy grail of cavernous, booming textures and uplifting euphoria that mark out the most transcendent of rave tracks. The deceptively gentle opening bars of 'Morning Star' are interrupted by a viscously squelching bassline, Cass McCombs' vocals dancing deliciously with the raw beat.

Rejecting contemporary tech-fetishism, Novo Line has a near-supernatural ability to exorcise novel sequences, weaving together a record that speaks to the ghost in the machine.

"Broken Allures", the fifth LP from trio Jac Berrocal, David Fenech, and Vincent Epplay (following releases on Blackest Ever Black, Akuphone, KlangGalerie), furthers their unique recording style with a musique concrète approach to mixing, characterized by the distinctive sound and technique of musicians and producers. Fenech and Epplay have paired with legendary French musician Berrocal, renowned for his collaborations with Nurse With Wound, Vince Taylor, Jaki Liebezeit, Pascal Comelade, Sunny Murray etc. "Broken Allures" is arguably their most coherent and fully accomplished album to date.

For this album, the trio has invited two fantastic musicians to compose with them: COSEY FANNI TUTTI and JAH WOBBLE.

COSEY FANNI TUTTI (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey, COUM Transmissions) contributes vocals, cornet, and electric guitar in her unique style. She has also written lyrics for two tracks on the album and brings a radical touch to the instrumental track 'Viva la Hacienda', which, in her own words, recalls her time recording with Throbbing Gristle.

JAH WOBBLE (founding member of Public Image Limited, and collaborator with African Head Charge, Brian Eno, Björk, Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit, Bill Laswell, Primal Scream, Evan Parker, Sinéad O'Connor etc) plays a deep bass line on one track. He adds his signature industrial dub sound, with deep sub-bass frequencies.
