These four walls should be whitewashed  
Or painted with a tropical beach  
With the sun on your head that warms you and tans you  
So much you feel it even when you sleep  

In the book I keep two daggers closed and folded  
The slightly faded photo of a friend  
And like a processor I slowly shut down  
Now finished  
A newspaper clipping with my biography  
The headline is a fierce criminal  

I don’t want it to be seen  
And I don’t want it to be said  
That the accused monster is afraid

I also ask forgiveness of my soul  

I have always lived only under a stars and stripes roof  
And in America the penalty is capital  
On the wall there’s a phrase I beg your forgiveness  
I wrote it right underneath the crucifix  

The wardrobe is under the bed it’s a cardboard box  
I locked inside all my projects  
It’s a horizontally striped suit without a belt  
And without my shoes the uniform major a Tchaikovsky concerto  
A human gesture from the conductor  
I don’t even want to say goodbye to the relatives  
I just want to leave in peace  

If I had a screwdriver I’d stop the faucet  
That drip drip keeps me company  
I go in sync with the breath of my chest  
It’s the hourglass of my life

Everybody knows by now, it’s no secret anymore.
It won’t matter anyhow; they all know the score
The final count is in, you did not win, don’t cry, neither did I.
Just count the cost, we both lost, but we tried.

Everybody seemed surprised, thought we were a sure thing.
No one grabbed the ring – the prize – and what’s most surprising
Is how there were no tears; it just appears that we ceased to be,
And just like that – it fell flat -  we tried.

To be everything to everybody and not enough to one another.
We were walking thru the motions; saw no reason left to bother.
Passion soon gave way to another cheap cliché, 
And it doesn’t work that way, never has.
No one can please everybody, only fools will even try.
Giving in to everybody leaves nothing else except the lies.
When you speak to everybody, tell ‘em we’re not trying anymore.

Every time you play with matches, someone gets burned in the flame.
Every time you take from one hand, someone loses, someone gains.
Is it fair that you and I were spared?  Unprepared to decide – but we tried.        

To be everything to everybody and not enough to one another.
