Objekt at Draaimolen Festival 2024

Josep Berruezo, also known as Berru, is a devoted techno enthusiast. In 2012, he founded Estratechno, a collective that helped shape Barcelona’s underground scene through more than 30 club nights and free parties. He later curated Escapepodcast (2018), a genre-fluid radio show spotlighting emerging local talent.

As an artist, Dj Berru is deeply influenced by Detroit techno, but he also explores deeper and more hypnotic sounds that can range from ambient to breaks or even dub. He also performs as The Option B, a moniker under which he reviews the history of electronic music through acid-house, electro, jungle or synth-pop gems.


About the recording:
This set was recorded live at LAUT (Barcelona) last February during the first Selene series party. It was a special night for Dj Berru, a true fan of the project curated by his longtime friend and mentor, DOC, who was also playing along with Shoal.
When asked about the inspiration behind this set, Dj Berru is concise and clear:
'DOC has always taken a genreless approach to his mixes on Selene Series. I wanted to pay tribute to that by capturing the essence of the sounds he’s been showcasing all these years within 90 minutes. To keep it cohesive, I focused on the feeling these sounds evoke in me — a sense of daring, dark and psychedelic exploration.'

Continuum: a coherent whole characterized as a collection, sequence, or progression of values or elements varying by minute degrees.

Exploring the unknown inevitably brings surprises, and the magical sound universe we are traveling in only delivers good ones! As we survey The Continuum, we have been blessed with a new sonic territory to scout. The host welcoming us to this new musical biome is no other than David Ortolà aka d_o_ppelgaenger. 

It was a while ago when we discovered David’s d_o_ppelgaenger moniker. It was in a mystical hut in the forest, in the middle of nowhere, lost in Spain, surrounded by friends. His performance left a mark on us, so we couldn’t be more honored to welcome him to our Continuum adventures. 

The music of d_o_ppelgaenger is far from convention. Always in restless motion between introspective or atmospheric moments, and emotional melodic passages. No bread and butter ambient here: one second you are in a concrete avant-garde sounding scape, and the next a broken beat is gently stroking your hips. Moments of submerged deep techno, touches of noise. A push and pull, a back and forth, a conversation held from the furthest corners of sound. 

‘Restless’ fits David quite well. Composer, producer, performer and professor. As a solo artist, he has composed multiple electronic, ambient and techno works, modular scores as Grooves #1 (2017) and Déjà vu (2024), or unique musical events such as Efímeras for 20 Pianos (2011). He is also half of the revered act Pajaro Dune together with Estrato Aurora. They have performed at beloved events like Espacio Perpendicular, Parallel, and released on labels like Alpenglühen or Grabaciones Perpendiculares. They also recently launched their own label, Sediments, featuring the recording of that magic forest hut performance I told you about. Not to be missed. 

What about his gift to The Continuum? d_o_ppelgaenger brings a live recording of his performance for the 8th edition of the Volumens Festival. His spell took over the Jardí del Centre d’Arts Digitals Bombas Gens in València, on the 17th of October last year. Not by chance and always pushing the envelope, the live set is designed based on (8x2)+1=17 numerical proportions. Another flawless live execution of the sound we described above. Get ready for a mesmerizing experience by the maestro d_o_ppelgaenger. Thank you for opening the gates to your music land.

The Labyrinth 2024 - Shhhhh

This mix has been brewing in my head for a while now.. An inkling of it first started to pop up back in October while we were at our biannual Delayed gathering in the mountains of upstate New York. I played a set with a dear friend on the Sunday morning there - cozy & hopeful music from various corners of our collections that don't get played very often but are set aside for special moments. My favorite kind of music.. It was one of the most memorable sets I've played & brought up a ton of emotions & memories from past experiences hearing some of those songs. Memories from my wedding, memories of my brother, memories from times living in Los Angeles when Sundays were all about lounging around all day in the sunshine after nights of dancing into the early hours of the morning. We laughed, cried, danced, ate lunch, all over the course of the morning into the early afternoon. It laid the foundation for how I wanted to approach this mix for Zach.

Sundays for me have always been a day of healing - mentally, physically, emotionally. It's a day to seek inner peace & a day to be reminded of everything you have to be grateful for in spite of anything else. I recorded this mix on a rainy Saturday earlier this month, channeling all of those memories & feelings, with my dog by my feet while my wife & daughter wandered about the house, making beaded bracelets & doing various arts & crafts.

From me to you, a warm hug & the promise of spring.
