Psychiatrist and author Frederick van Eden began keeping a dream diary in 1889. Every day, barely awake until his brain deleted the memory of dreams from its "cache," the doctor wrote down what he dreamed. After eight years, he achieved what he did not aspire to and did not expect: he found himself in a dream that he could control. It was a controlled dream, later called "conscious dreaming" by Eden. The doctor coined the term in 1913, writing a detailed article on the phenomenon.

In 1968, Celia Green, Ph.D., of Oxford University, analyzed the phenomenon of conscious dreams and suggested that they appear in the rapid sleep phase. It is so called because in it our eyeballs move involuntarily rapidly. Twelve years later, Steven Laberge, a scientist at Stanford University, developed a method that could confirm or deny the existence of conscious dreams. Subjects had to give a sign from the dream - to look around in a predetermined sequence, and they succeeded. In 2004, the experiment was successfully repeated by German researchers Daniel Erlacher and Michael Schredl.
