The Death Throes of a Jaded Empire

January 29th, 2021 sees the release of Jack Cade’s third solo studio album, ‘The Death Throes of a Jaded Empire’, written and recorded by Jack whilst holed up in a studio during lockdown. The album title reflects a growing sense that, as a nation, ‘Great’ Britain is somewhat living on it’s past perceived glories, much like a washed up Hollywood actor continually recounting tales of the good old days. Everyone else is moving on, yet we seem unable to reimagine ourselves in a better way.

Musically, it falls somewhere between 2016’s dark and at times attritional ‘A Murder of Crows’ and the more upbeat tunes of 2019’s ‘Bear Bones’. Covering the theme of awakening, it weaves its way through tales of growing up in a rundown seaside town, hidden history, navigating the difficulties of modern divisions, protest, deception, love and the struggles of letting go of past regrets. It would be fair to say, Jack doesn’t really do light and easy subjects or tales, and his songs are delivered in a distinctive rough baritone that, at times, has a nasty growling edge, as if he has his own personal overdrive pedal lodged in his throat.

Ultimately though, it is all about the lyrics, stories, observations on life and the experiences along that well-worn road that breathe life into his songs, painting broad and accessible pictures on each subject.
 
As Jack puts it. “ I am, like all of us, the product of my upbringing, the places I’ve lived, the family and friends around me, the media I consume, the lessons learned at school, in books and even comics. But the history we learn rather than experience, as a very old adage goes, is ‘written by the winners’, and as such, any uncomfortable truths and facts are buried, lost and polished out of existence. Like the title of the third song on the album, the last decade has been like a gradual ‘Awakening’ for me, a realignment of knowledge and a lot of the foundation blocks that make up my understanding of life and society, and my place in it. This album explores some of this awakening, from my roots growing up in a fading Victorian seaside town to the growing realisation that a lot of what I have taken for granted as being truth is far from it in my little bubble of life. All I can do now is strive to relearn and restructure, question more, open my mind to new ideas and truths, and build new perspectives. “

Jack is joined on the album by a talented bunch of musician Ben Cox-Smith on Dobro Slide Guitar, Hana Maria on Violin, Adam Perry and  Mark Tudor with some drums and percussion.

On October 31st 2020, two of jacks most popular tracks, The River and Roll With Them Punches, appeared in the Vampire movie ‘Blood From Stone’. Part horror, drama, love story and thriller rolled into one, the movie is set amongst the bright lights of a Nevada casino town where the old world order meets the new with brutal consequences. The river symbolises the flow of life and history, for a short time we walk beside that river as we live our lives, before stepping back into its flow. This song was inspired by my father, who lived his life for his family, he never sought out fame and fortune, he was content to walk by that river, work hard and focus on giving us, with my mum, the best life he could. So, remember those who have come before, as you are never fully returned to the river until your name is mentioned no more.

This is the first track to be released from the new Jack Cade album Bear Bones.

Jack Cade - "He Lies On His Side is inspired by being at my folks recently, helping them sort through a life time of memories, it's about looking back over the choices you made, how they change and what becomes important to you, which way will you turn? Often we only know our parents as just that, we forget that before they became our parents they had dreams and ideas about where their lives may go, before they decided to commit to bringing up a family. I'm eternally grateful to my folks for making the sacrifices they did, so that I could go out and live the life I wanted too. The chorus is by way of a homage to the song Outdoor Miner, by Wire, a song from my youth which I often find myself singing, whilst lying on my side thinking about life."

Having grown up in the 70's my awareness of history and culture was informed by a mixture of school, TV, books and comics along with influences from friends and family and the wider community. I spent a large part of my life I guess feeling lucky to be British, I mean, who didn't like the British, we had brought so much to the world, let alone as the football chants always went, we won two world wars and one world cup. I had no reason to question these thoughts, that are subtly discouraged when you are young.

Awakening is about the realisation that we need to strive to relearn and restructure our understanding of where we have come from, question more, open our minds to new ideas and truths, and build new perspectives. You can't change what has happened, but at the very least you should know it, understand it and do something to mitigate its effects in the present day.

Collision Music, based out of Brighton and Reading, in the United Kingdom, is the rebirth of the 90's label originally based in Medway Kent. Back in those days we released exclusively on vinyl and our roster of bands included The Love Family, Somersault and Fortune West.

Having taken a break from releasing records to take on other music projects, promoting and an online music reviewing site things have gone full circle and now original founder Mark Wrangham has teamed up with producer Tom Anderson to bring you a whole load of new artists from in and around the Berkshire area. We think there's a whole lot of talent in this area and we aim to give artists a platform to record and release there material.

There is no one defining genre to the music but it loosely falls into Singer Song writer, Blues, Americana, Country and Folk. The first release on the reformed label came out in September 2011, Jack Cade and the Everyday Sinners album This Fiery Road, and a new album by the Love Family is out in January 2012. Which has all served to give us the momentum to set up a number of releases for 2012.

Along with the new material we'll be making our back catalogue available over the coming months, this will include singles from Fortune West, Somersault and The Love Family and will be the first time they are available digitally.
