Dubbest round all bases in full circle influence in their early roots reggae-inspired Color Red debut single “Unusual Times.” Featuring longtime influence, Elliot Martin of John Brown’s Body on vocals, the track was originally composed in 2013 based on a concept that the world is changing at a rapid rate when it comes to technology, social grace, and the dichotomy between input and output that can be simultaneously exciting and confusing. The band calls for listeners to examine the big picture and consider the impact that this make-or-break opportunity can impart on this era in society. Using just two chords to convey the message and dynamics, Dubbest revisited the tune during the pandemic and brought it to life in the studio. The sentiment makes more sense than ever as these are indeed unusual times that we’re living in.

Tim Carman Trio puts an Art Blakey-inspired Latin groove on their take of the Bud Powell tune “Buster Rides Again.” While in quarantine, Carman spent a lot of time reminiscing about his formative years of musical study and listening to jazz records after the passing of his first drum teacher, Bob Gullotti. Powell’s tune was one that always stuck out and Art Blakey records were getting frequent spins during Carman’s listening sessions. The combination of Powell’s classic tune mixed with the Latin groove gelled surprisingly well and Carman enlisted percussionist Dave Brophy to accentuate his version of the track. The band did one take and ended up using that cut on the record.

Denver’s mavericks of street music, Brothers of Brass, capture the energy of people leaving a concert in their original song “Egress.” With a titanic New Orleans brass band-inspired sound, “Egress” has all the key components of a full-bodied brass band hit with fiery trumpet screams, rousing saxophone solos, an commanding rhythm section of tuba and drums, and a surprise call-and-response vocal section at the end to take the song home. The group got their start busking on the 16th Street Mall and melds together roots from Atlanta, New Orleans, and the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado and has become a staple in both the local music scene and the touring circuit.

For almost a decade Denver-based production company J2G Live has been bringing together in-demand musicians in today’s circuit to celebrate the greatest dance party songs of all time for their annual Dance Party Time machine concerts. When the COVID-19 pandemic stalled live performances, J2G Live pivoted to remote collaborative performances to continue to bring people joy through community and music. Several tracks were performed during online events such as LivWell’s ‘420 for a Cause’ live stream festival in 2020. The audio of these performances has been professionally mixed, mastered, and distributed by Color Red for a series of digital singles to be released worldwide and enjoyed from anywhere. “The Cutdown” gets its name from a late-night harvest on the eve of Polyrhythmics’ departure to their annual late-night appearances during New Orleans Jazz Fest. Guitarist Ben Bloom imagined the track setting the scene for a vibrant late night on Frenchmen St late at night during the city’s flagship musical gathering where modern electronic sounds are met with spirited funk bands performing to eager crowds at iconic venues. “The Cutdown” is the soundtrack to stepping outside to get some air, running into friends casually swaying to a second-line street party, and raising the vibes even higher. This track is off of the group’s 2020 full-length LP ‘Man From the Future’ and the digital single release is in celebration of the record’s second vinyl pressing coming out on Color Red in spring 2022.

Eddie Roberts (guitarist and bandleader of The New Mastersounds/founder of Color Red) first met Lamar Williams Jr. at a benefit show in Denver, CO in early 2018 coordinated by Peter Levin (keyboardist in The Gregg Allman Band). They connected instantly, both musically and interpersonally and when The New Mastersounds passed through Atlanta 3 months later, Williams enthusiastically joined the quartet for 3 songs and cultivated seeds of a long-lasting musical relationship.

“Trouble” is a testament to this fortified musical bond. Recorded in November 2018, The New Mastersounds laid a silky pad rhythmic precision allowing Williams to float on top with his assured, yet demure vocals and John Macy’s hypnotic pedal steel lines. The group will be following up with a socially-charged video to be released at the end of the month. Collaborations like this epitomize Roberts’ vision when founding Color Red as a platform for musical compatriots to document all-original music.

“In general, the song inspiration came from how I think people perceive each other without giving love a chance for them to learn and lend their abilities to each unique situation,” Williams explains.

“Birth of Giants” is Death by Dub’s second single as part of a monthly release series via Color Red. The track is a finely tuned display of studio precision and dedication to artistry. Co-founders Dan Africano and Scott Flynn (along with Drew Sayers, who helped mix the track) used the space within the song to allow the effects to serve as equal focal points to the instrumental parts. The simmering slower tempo allows for a healthy amount of dark reverb on the snare and the use of a phaser on the hi-hats and cymbals which adds a swirly texture reminiscent of Lee Perry's Black Ark recordings. This track is heavy in authentic dub-style production. Having Africano in addition to Color Red producers Mike Tallman and Josh Fairman at the helms showcases the collaborative environment that is the root to Color Red’s endeavors—to create all-original music by some of the heaviest players in today’s music scene.

"Chelada” by the Polyrhythmics is a spicy melange of flavors that combines middle eastern tonalities over a simple, but heavy groove. The band veers away from traditional compositional tactics by keeping the rhythm section at the forefront with horns augmenting the tune. Ben Bloom (guitar) and Jason Gray (bass) carry the melody while the horns add textures through punches and swells on muted trumpet (Scott Morning), trombone (Elijah Clark) and flute (Art Brown). If you listen closely, you will hear nods to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer.” As the third single off of the band’s fifth full-length album ‘Man from the Future," the group creates different movements within singular songs as demonstrated by a transition to Karl Olson’s percussion feature over a vamp that then passes the torch to Nathan Spicer’s sparse and eerie Moog solo. The song crescendos into an epic war-like melody that is introduced by the horns and echoed by the full band.

“Sinkhole” by Death by Dub juxtaposes the feeling of the world’s weight with seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Using a descending, dissonant bass line to convey the sinking feeling of life’s stresses, the heavy feeling is released through a bright and lighthearted segue signaled by buoyant horn melodies. The track is the sixth Color Red release from the studio project led by Dan Africano and Scott Flynn and particularly embraces inspiration from Midnite, Carlton Barrett (drummer of The Wailers), and 10 ft Ganja Plant.
