James Johnson (AKA Plural, Divine) is a electronic music producer, composer and DJ. His performance history started in 1995, and has played all over the world. His calm demeanor belies the massive amounts of energy he creates in his highly technical DJ sets, and the ethereal beauty of his live performances.
His releases on over a dozen labels have garnered him the acclaim of dance music’s elite, and have made him a rather sought-after recording and remixing talent. Well known Dj’s like Dave Clark, Alan Oldham, Ben Sims and Paul Mac are dropping his tracks.

Interview:

1.  You were just picked up by Juan Atkins’ Metroplex label for a 12″ EP recently, Shifting Forward as it’s titled. Congratulations on that! Can you tell us a little about the three original tracks, and their compositions? How did you manage to construct such classic sounding Metroplex material?

Thank you, The tracks I came up with were just the idea of what Metroplex is to me. I was thinking they need to be straight forward stripped down minimal funk with a nice edge to them. I wanted to pay homage to the old but also try to keep it more modern. I think I achieved it haha…Aubrey Saei’s remix of Shifting Forward is dope If I must say so myself.

2.  Columbus, Ohio is where you call home. How would you say your artist presence is received there?

I have to say my Columbus people show me mad respect and love. They are proud of my accomplishments. It says a lot when someone goes out of there way to throw a Release party for you without me even saying anything. Thank you “Squared” and all of my friends for the love and support, you rock ! :)

3.  What is it about the city that you love, and what inspirations from your surroundings do you apply to your music, if any?

Columbus is a great city to live in with out the crazy problems of a larger city. Great diversity of people, food and culture. My inspirations come from my friends and true brother Kevin Kennedy aka FBK. He pushes me like no other…listen to his tracks they are dope without a doubt.

4.  In terms of workflow, in your opinion what are the key elements of nailing a quality track for the dance floor?

My work flow? I just do what I want plan and simple. If I make a loop and it gives me goose bumps its a go from there. Then I let someone hear or I post to Soundcloud to see if anyone else if feeling it like I am, or am I just crazy?… haha!

5.  Any other Plural activity coming up we should know about?

I have a few digital release coming in 2015 : UKR, Servo Tracks, Timeslice Recordings, Ditekt
There will be some remixes coming out on Vinyl 2015 also…..TBA
Hopefully will get travel and play more cities and countries 2015 :)

It’s quite some story that I won’t repeat here, but a couple of friends were engaged in some high jinx in the room whilst I was recording this and I think it really fed the energy of the mix!

Anti-government protests have rocked Hong Kong for months and the situation shows no sign of dying down. Hong Kong's protests started in June against proposals to allow extradition to mainland China.
Critics feared this could undermine the city's judicial independence and endanger dissidents.
Until 1997, Hong Kong was a British colony - meaning it was controlled by Britain. Since returning to Chinese rule, it has more autonomy than the mainland, and its people more rights. The arrangement is known as "one country, two systems".
City leader Carrie Lam agreed to suspend the extradition bill, but demonstrations developed to include demands for full democracy and an inquiry into police actions.
The bill was withdrawn in September. But clashes between police and activists have become increasingly violent, with police firing live bullets and protesters attacking officers and throwing petrol bombs.

On October 19 2019, tens of thousands of people marched to demand a final say on the Brexit deal. Huge numbers marched through the British capital as part of the People’s Vote demonstration, while others marched to stop Brexit all together. A spokesperson from the People’s Vote group  estimated that one million people joined their march. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was among the protesters. The UK is set to go to the polls on 12 December after MPs backed Boris Johnson's call for an election following months of Brexit deadlock. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "This election is a once-in-a-generation chance to transform our country and take on the vested interests holding people back."

There are fewer than 48 hours left to register to vote in next month's general election. You need to register at least 12 working days before an election - so, with the election on 12 December, the deadline is 23:59 GMT on Tuesday. If you can register to vote, then please do so at: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
