exactly one week before my album came out, I was giving the eulogy at my grandma’s funeral.

for the first 18 years of my life, i saw her every single day. a few months before she died, she asked to hear my music but she didn’t have a computer or cd player. so i loaded some songs on a USB drive and plugged it into the back of her flatscreen TV. after listening to everything, she said she liked this one the best so i decided to name it after her. i opted to keep it off the album and now it feels appropriate for it to exist on its own. i wanted to share it with all of you, not only as a present, but also as a goodbye note to 2016. much love to all my friends and family and everyone that gave me any kind of support this year. here’s to 2017.

Fa Fa Ashara

An excerpt of a 30-minute composition that I made for Emeka Ogboh's installation 'Egwutronica', as a part of the exhibition 'Disguise: Masks and Global African Art', at the Seattle Art Museum in 2015.

The music is based on recordings of Igbo ceremonial music from southeastern Nigeria, performed by traditional Igbo musicians and recorded by sound artist Emeka Ogboh. These recordings have then been subjected to various electronic treatments (heavy dub-like rework if you will) and overdubbed with some synthesized elements at my studio in Helsinki, Finland. The complete installation music consists of two 30-minute compositions (based around the two original 30-minute recordings), both slightly different in character and atmosphere.
