The machine sprung to life with a great electric roar, inside it buzzed and hummed sending out an enthusiastic noise which echoed with a precise tone and texture. This was the flange factory, where dreams were made and the noises of nightmares echoed between empty walls as dancers moved back and forth. The lights began to flicker and flash as the electrical currents pulsed and vibrated with a scattergun sense of purpose. Soon they would be lost beneath the fog and the sounds of a world beyond... 

Lucas Croon is a producer on who it is wise to keep close tabs, he has released music previously on Themes For Great Cities and Aiwo. Now he lends a hand to a new split release on Feines Tier, an imprint based in Cologne. His track "Flange Factory" is destined to do wonders in the hands of well informed dj's.

Three years ago in a different life, we used to release tracks for people to dance in a club. We still miss it sometimes, so we decided to repeat the feeling. The second Born Free EP is what we personally think is our best, so we kindly asked the label to put it out on our personal Bandcamp page. To keep it fresh and more exclusive we added a very different version of the Navy Fit Republic track. It's called Dub State. It was born during a session of mixing with Leo and his mighty space echo when we tried to make a dubbed out bass in it, but in the end, and rightfully so, Sling picked the cleaner version. We couldn't agree more, but that second version remained in our hearts and we were waiting for a good opportunity to share it with friends. The pack also includes a poster and a great "Death Dancing Waltz" cover by one and only Marko aka Floating Bstrd, which now feels almost like a precursor of what happened with the world since then. We hope this waltz will end soon and the kick returns. And then comes a snare.

Dub State

He was caught in the crossfire, a throng of shrill voices echoed out from all angles, and he wished to play no part in it. It had come to an apex after hours of back and forth; accusations had been thrown about, revelations were made, truces agreed — though not for long. He preferred to remain a spectator, to sit back and watch the madness unfold, to float in the flood...

Following Abul Mogard's reiterations of Tapan's Europa release in February, Berlin's Malka Tuti ready their next release, a solo debut from one half of Red Axes, Niv Arzi, under a new moniker: Nic Arizona. Ahead of the full album, 'Shavua Tov', which is set for release later this year, the label are teasing a couple of tracks for your listening (and dancing) pleasure — a 12" dance version and a remix from Salon Des Amateurs resident Lena Willikens.

HRDF: Who are you? 
DG: Behind the pseudonym Drama Goddess my name is Ričardas. I’m a music junkie from Vilnius, and during these strange times I have been spending even more time producing music.
 
HRDF: How did you discover this track ?
DG: I was listening to the legendary Jac Berrocal’s discography. There was one album I haven’t heard yet and there I found this jazzy experimental avant-garde beauty track.

HRDF: Why did you choose to edit it ?
DG: The sounds in the track ticked all the boxes for me, but I wanted to change it up making it more suited for the dancefloor.

HRDF: Any tips for digging ? 
DG: I don’t have a clear answer to that as there are many ways to look for music nowadays - especially online. But you could try the old-fashioned way, like record stores or second hand shops.

Human Endeavour Records, the newest member of the Ransom Note Records label family, returns with ‘Confession Time’, its second release and first solo artist EP from Anastasia Zems.

Hot on the heels of the inaugural release, a Various Artists EP featuring six producers from across the world, they welcome the DJ, vocalist and producer for a four-track EP of heads down, mid-tempo sludge that sees her thread the needle between acid, EBM, new beat and cold wave.

With opener ‘Underwear’ Anastasia plots a course into murky depths. The most club-ready cut on the release, it’s driven by a pulsating acid line and rumbling bass that soon give way to hypnotic synth patterns and Anastasia’s sultry, commanding spoken word.

On the inspiration behind the EP, Anastasia explains: “Behind each of the tracks there is a story about something personal. It so happens that my vocals usually appear in tracks during improvisation and most often do not change. This is my way of expressing feelings. It turns out that this is the time for confession.”

As a DJ and producer Anastasia Zems chases a counterpart to her urban upbringing, drawing inspiration from the tribal sounds of imagined rainforests. Her psychedelic, rhythmic productions, which she laces with her signature mysterious vocals have earned her singles, remixes and EPs on labels like Needs, Les Yeux Orange, ИДА, Fucanglong Files and Whypeopledance.

Human Endeavour is the newest addition to Ransom Note Records’ family of sub-labels. Curated and run by Ransom Note Editor, and one half of DJ duo Kiara Scuro, Rosie Ama Cain, the label will be a “space for artists who are exploring the dark, deep and hypnotic corners of the musical spectrum.

Mother of Mars​ is the latest musical outlet of New Yorkers ​Vito Roccoforte & Gabriel Andruzzi.​ Having cut their teeth as the rhythm section of​ The Rapture​, who were at the forefront of the late nineties post-punk revival scene, they took to channeling their mutual love of disco, house and techno, the bandmates took to DJing together as ​Vito & Druzz​i. Having honed their skills and joint workflow, the Mother of Mars project sees them shift focus from club orientated productions towards Avant-Garde, New Age and Experimental influences.

2018 saw their first exploration as Mother of Mars releasing their ​Seed 2 Sky​ 12” on Ransom Note Records. These synth-laden tracks, both 10 minutes in length, were lovingly crafted from their shared Brooklyn-based studio and cast a midpoint between each’s wide reaching influences. This time around, they come armed with the angelic vocals of Japanese expat ​Jaiko Suzuki​ and a variety of percussion from across the globe.
Space Without A Shadow​ is the first outing from this new body of work and is in many ways considered by the pair to be the missing track from their ​Seed 2 Sky ​release. Although both refreshing and exciting, the track unfolds in an almost familiar way. The result is a beautifully-strange fusion of genre and culture alike. Over a beating kick and layers of driving percussion, repetitive synth riffs swirl in and out of focus clearing the way for Jaiko’s multi-tracked airy vocals, subtly playing off of one another in the foreground.

“Space Without a Shadow had its genesis shortly after the writing of the first Mother of Mars release, Hera in the Valley, which came out on Ransom Note Records the 19th of January 2018. This release also marks the wonderful and talented Jaiko Suzuki joining the Mother of Mars universe. Space Without a Shadow was always intended to be the next record after Hera in the Valley and now 2+ years later or a mere fraction of a second in cosmic time, which Mother of Mars prefers to work in, we give you Space Without a Shadow.
In the song—Vito, Jaiko and Gabriel all seemed to be moving through convergent musical and lyrical lines (or possibly cycles or spirals) that passed through a space of negating the popular modern idea of the individualized objectified self. Not an annihilation of self, but the dissolving of a particular and common conception of self. As part of this process we possibly make space for something else altogether or maybe we even get rid of a sense of delimited space all together. And perhaps this comes across to the listener, and they get to share in this experience.”

On remix duties is long time friend ​Willie Burns​ who weirds up the dancefloor, still being respectful to the original and Glasgow’s rising star Mr TC who progs the whole thing up utilising the bassline to reinvented effect.

The track was mixed by previous collaborator ​Ewan Pearson​ - who remixed and produced for The Rapture -​ ​and Mastered by ​Sarah Register​ who has worked with the likes of Lee Scratch Perry, Ariana Grande, Amon Tobin and Depeche Mode.
