Serge Dubrovsky AKA Dubmasta - selector, producer, designer, journalist, has been pulling out finest dubs since 1979. Born in Chernihiv, resides in Kyiv, Ukraine. Started out with various noise / hardcore bands in 90’s now is a major driving force for VzyalSoundSystem AKA VS AKA ВЗЯЛ project - one of them first electronic dub groups in Ukraine. Holowez is the first of a two part series compiled out 40 plus songs that Dejot recorded during a 3 month stay in Johannesburg, South Africa. It's an auteur electronica record, one teetering between a focused club functionality –  heavily engaged with South African rhythmic sensibilities – and a fluent deployment of a whole array of experimental vernaculars. It’s a work that is layered and replete with field recordings: full of collected textures, padded with a meticulously sculpted, radiant low end and bracketed off by a cornucopia of swinging, jagged polyrhythms. 

Experimental, at times clubby, warm, off-kilter, intertextual, intimate and so inviting, these are some things that come to mind while listening to Holowez. Part two of this series, also a full length, entitled Uhujano will be released on February 15.

All About :: The Art of Collage & Rhetorical Velocity

I am specifically interested in situations where composers anticipate and strategize future third-party remixing of their compositions as part of a larger and complex rhetorical strategy that plays out across physical and digital spaces. We find this type of thinking—the asking of “how might the text be rewritten?” and “why, where, and for whom might this text be rewritten?”—an increasingly important set of questions in a digital age characterized, for instance, by swift, easy, and deep web searching and by copying and pasting practices. 

COLLAGE ::  Artistic compositions of materials and objects pasted and/or sewn/woven over and through surfaces, often with unifying and/or juxtaposing structures, lines, colors, themes in order to create textured, alive, amplified spaces. 

SYNTHESIS (AKA Mashup): Creating Compelling Texts comprised of borrowed, reconstituted, and original material.
