The band Dead Moon has always been dear to my heart and this version is a tribute to their fearless leader Fred Cole. I learned of Fred’s passing while on tour with The Church and recorded the song in my hotel room with an acoustic guitar, a slide and an ebow. I have kept the song for myself and out of respect for the band and their devout fans  did not want to release it without his wife’s approval. 
I was in shock when I received the kindest email from Toody Cole letting me know that she loved hearing Fred’s words again and that I had her complete blessing. Xo Iris Doe

Preston Lovinggood was the driving force behind Wild Sweet Orange – a powerful and profoundly literate indie-rock combo from Birmingham, AL who is sorely missed by still-growing cult of fans. Despite releasing a sole, beloved full-length and a few EPs, label politics found Wild Sweet Orange dropped. In the time that followed, Lovinggood retreated from music and the rest of the band, led by guitarist Taylor Shaw, carried on in the form of The Great Book of John. 
Fortunately, Preston found music once more… Or did it find him? Regardless, Lovinggood is in the process of recording a new album of original material with Darrell Thorp (The Great Book of John, Radiohead, Beck) in sunny Los Angeles, California. In the meantime we have this long-awaited piece of vinyl featuring Lovinggood backed by his compatriots in Wild Sweet Orange before they called it a day… So don’t call it a comeback. 
The A-side is an amazing and beautiful cover of Paul Simon’s “Duncan” – a song that could have been written especially for Lovinggood all those years ago. With an indelible atmosphere, a perfect vocal and a driving rhythm, “Duncan” is one of those rare covers that is as good (if not better) than the original. The flipside, “No Baby,” is a vaguely-blusey Lovinggood original that flows smooth and warm. Consider it a taste of what’s to come. 
As with all Communicating Vessels’ 7-inch singles, “Duncan” comes complete with a digital download of both sides. The songs will also be available from the reputable digital outlet of your choice. Available, for your pleasure, on November 15th, 2011.

Jeffrey Cain (Remy Zero) handed Steve Kilbey (The Church) a disc mysteriously credited to “Isidore.” Much to Cain’s surprise, what was once an instrumental came requited by words and melody sung in Kilbey’s distinctive baritone – a collaboration was born. 8 years later Isidore has reappeared! Life Somewhere Else is a sprawling epic featuring another sterling vocal performance by Kilbey (perhaps his best ever) and Cain’s sterling sonic alchemy. Though short enough to fit on a single compact disc, Life Somewhere Else is spread across four sides of 180-gram vinyl – the medium where the album’s sequence is enjoyed best.

Haunting and beautiful, Life Somewhere Else has a power beyond its corporeal form.

Gregory Scott Slay was a husband, father, and musician – known most notably as a member of Remy Zero. Before he succumbed to Cystic Fibrosis on Jan 1, 2010, Slay finished completed his final musical salvo, Horsethief Beats / The Sound Will Find You. Performed and recorded by Slay with contributions from fellow Remy Zero alum, Jeffery Cain and Cedric LaMoyne, Horsethief Beats is an album tailor-made for smoky late nights – recalling Bowie’s twisted, late-seventies funk, Tom Waits’ shambolic bliss, and just a touch of latter day NIN. But for every dark turn there is a beautiful hook and a weightless vocal – apropos to the fact that Slay lived every day of his life to the fullest. And though he’s gone his music and legacy remain.
