Pinkshinyultrablast, a five-piece band from Saint-Petersburg in Russia, are set to release their debut album ‘Everything Else Matters’ on 26th January.

Hailing from a city more synonymous with the State Conservatory rather than a gang of shoegaze addicts, they’ve been compared to Lush. But this is no mere throwback tribute - due to their sharp, icy electronics and ability to subvert the genre, bringing something new to the table. They possess  not only the spirit of late 80s/early 90s British bands like Ride, but also machine-made sounds of the same era from Sabres Of Paradise or Global Communication, not to mention wider vibrations like Cluster, Popul Vuh, Terry Riley and Philip Glass.

Disdain for a stagnant scene can often be a driving force of creativity; the band say of St Petersburg that, “we realised the local indie scene was totally boring and wanted to play something radically different”. That vision has been realised – this is an album brimming with playful melody and finely-crafted songwriting. Imagine the scope of a Caribou record, fronted by Elizabeth Fraser soundtracking a grizzly Raskolnikov crime.

The band take their name from an Astrobrite album, an act who were, according to the band, instrumental in how they “researched spaces between ambient, heavy guitar and pop music” .The spaces are what stand out, the production creates a dream-like affair, while space to breathe and reflect on the beauty of the music is accommodated. There is a sparseness to the album that in turn gives spaciousness, even expansiveness.

The second single ‘Holy Forest’ is released 19th January. The song is indicative of an album full of melodic gems and shimmering shoegaze - euphoric with spectral guitars, its sharp edged pop has a radiant charm.  Welcome to your new favourite Russian band.

Pinkshinyultrablast - Holy Forest

This is part of the soundtrack for my upcoming book, ASH. The composition reflects a battle of wills between a maniacally focused man and a courageous, determined woman. The first half of the piece is a collection of reversed musical thoughts. Then there is a suspension as the two consider each other. An accord is made and two begin an epic path that may or may not portend well for humanity.

Book passage:

Yumiko invited them to sit and share in a house blend of tea harvested from the very garden flora. They sipped and took the measure of each other. Devlin became a conduit for a delicate dance. A negotiation of wills. Woman - fierce steward of a power both hers and of unknown origins working through her. Man - zealot wanting its entirety in all of his unconstrained arrogance and privilege. Both - not understanding there was a compulsion working through them until it was far too late.

In the end…an exchange. Knowledge for knowledge. Yumiko would gain insight into the secrets Jubo had stumbled upon. The secrets that had kept her at kohai status. 

< Sometimes the past becomes dead. Sometimes the past becomes now. This plague of secrets that Jubo took into the sea has become undrowned. I thought I had found contentment as caretaker of this garden even if the public would never acknowledge my own skill under the weight of Jubo’s accomplishment. But, this man. This Max who proposes himself as a conduit towards Paradise has woken a heavy haunt within me. These awakened ghosts of the past will not fade back into memory this time. >

The band eagerly anticipate the release of their next album; rightly so - pensive and pounding, ‘Pure Mood’ oozes all things dank, dark and dreamy. The 12 track LP, to be released in November, presents a vivid and searing collection of songs.

The aptly named opening track 'Dream Again' is sung by bassist Alex Gehring, whose delicate voice echoes eerily over the spectral, otherworldly chords that pluck underneath. 'Heavy Metal Suicide' & ‘Stare At The Sun’ contain the same cathartic droning that has been previously celebrated by genre forefathers, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Tracks like 'Never' and 'Boys In Heat' plunge the band and listener alike deep into the uncharted sonic depths of unadulterated, decadent sound. Elliott Frazer's vocals accentuate the eruption of noise behind his anthemic lyrics, dipping in and out of brief moments of clarity before bursting back into the manic grit of songs like 'Big Bopper' and 'Frisbee'. There's a daring clash of fury and fragility throughout 'Pure Mood' that demonstrates Ringo Deathstarr are not just reliving a scene, they're re-inventing it with their shattering use of chaotic guitars and haunting voices.
