5 capable musicians improvise with guests

I'm a percussionist and guitar/bouzouki player based in Dublin, Ireland.
I mostly play Irish music. I tour with a show called Celtic Crossroads. also a part-time drummer for the Swallow's Tail Ceili Band.
I play West African percussion with a band called Foliba, and a part-time group called Afro-Roots Percussion.

I really enjoy reggae, and rootsy Americana, so I play some of that from time to time as well. I have a few other projects in the works at the minute.. more info on that as it happens.

Formed out of creative necessity in June of 2010, Mikey and the Scallywags met busking on the streets of Galway and are still based on the West Coast of Ireland. Renowned for their energetic and engaging live performances, the initial quartet of guitar, banjo, fiddle and double bass were quickly joined by drums and keys to create a melodic and beat driven sound with elements of bluegrass, gypsy, hip-hop and swing. 

Although a busking project initially, two months later they left the streets to perform at the Galway Arts festival 2010, followed a month later by their second gig at the Electric Picnic 2010. The Scallywags began touring all over Ireland and haven’t stopped since. 

Now with two highly successful years under their belts, 1,500 copies of the Living in the Light Ep sold and a fortune spent on new tyres, the band are readying to release their debut single 'Soul Shakers' in May with a string of gigs around the country.

Originators of “Gyp-Hop” (Gaelic gypsy hip-hop!) The Latchikós blend a rare and witty combination of spoken-word, sham-poetry, blues harmonica, and gypsy violin multi-layered with driving Gaelic beats over a raggle taggle bounce. "Gyp-Hop" seems to be catching on!

Barely together a year, The Latchikós exploded onto the national & international festival circuit this past summer: appearing at Glastonbury, Body & Soul (main stage), Calgary Folk Festival (8 shows!), Halifax International Busker Festival (21 shows over 5 days!), playing alongside 'The Waterboys' at The Vancouver Folk Festival and lastly returning to Ireland for the 10th anniversary of The Electric Picnic.

Who are The Latchikós?

Timmy Scanlan was crowned Ireland's Greatest Busker at the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil. Originally from Australia, this exceptional multi-instrumentalist has been touring the world 'busking' for many years.

Galway man Aindrias de Staic has won awards and accolades internationally for his comic acting and violin playing, which accelerate many of the live shows to a sublime crescendo. In London's West End, he performed "Woody Sez," a tribute to the great traveling bard, and in Australia he performed his darkly comic tales of debauchery and redemption (winning Best One Man Play at The Melbourne International Film Festival). Aindrias also presented TG4's 'An Jig Gig' this past Autumn.

Fellow Galway man, drummer, rapper and trombonist, Éimhín Cradock was a drummer for the Saw Doctors for five years in his early twenties. He traded touring internationally with that band for a RAW food diet! He brings high vibrational frequency and thriving super-human rhythms to The Latchikós!

Berlin-based duo Rufus Coates and Jess Smith create dark, atmospheric acoustic folk.

Drawing on the storytelling traditions of their Irish heritage, Coates and Smith write hymns to the shadow side: haunting murder ballads that rise, fall, simmer and brood – the sound of folk if it descended into the underworld and returned with the blackened truth.

2019’s single Christ Cross, featuring guest vocals of Wallis Bird, and the acclaimed Cut Us All Open, arrest uncompromising attention: on record and in the flesh.

Live, Coates testifies like an old world baritone preacher as barefoot Smith’s harmonies crescendo with spine-curdling passion – electrifying vocals that traverse the primal into ravishing, exorcist-style affliction.

Since 2016, the duo have magnetised a cult following along the European touring circuit, becoming loyal mainstays of their home scene in Berlin as members of the city’s coveted underground label, Famous Gold Watch Records.

Simultaneously masterful and affecting, there’s beauty in the depths here – all the more rousing up close and personal.
