As far back as the 1960s, there was a thriving recording industry in Angola. The largest record company of colonial ruler Portugal, Valentim de Carvalho, set up a pressing plant in Luanda and officially pressed licensed repertoire from labels like CBS and EMI. 

Urban Angolan music from the 1970s was made for a populace in revolt. It is a heady, rhythmic sound that swings with the recognizable semba (which draws from the same rhythms as the Brazilian samba) as often as it does with the Angolan merengue. It can jump into uncharted frenetic realms that are a unique mixture of local rhythms like rebita and semba, imported rhythms like samba and merengue, and rumba from neighboring Congolese tribes. We have humbly tried to reproduce this rich musical effervescence in this mix. 1h 21min made strictly of Angolan original 7inches carefully digged by our man DJ Afrosider Look. We carefully chose some of the  best tunes from labels that existed before Angola's independence (Rebita and Ngola, circa 1972-1976) and its brutal civil war (CDA and Merengue, circa 1975-1977).

Como o vulcão da Ilha do Fogo ainda recentemente tragicamente provou, há forças nas entranhas da terra cujo avassalador poder ainda desconhecemos e que não são possíveis de prever ou antecipar. O mesmo acontece na música. Apesar de hoje em dia se pensar que a música já não contém mistérios e que já não há nenhum recanto da memória por explorar, a verdade é que de vez em quando ainda surge uma erupção inesperada. Felizmente, no caso da música a única coisa que eventualmente pode ficar arrasada com tais fenómenos é a inércia. Caso claro: Fogo Fogo, o projecto de Francisco Rebelo (baixo), João Gomes (teclas), Márcio Silva (bateria) e Danilo Lopes e David Pessoa (vozes/guitarra) que regularmente tem explodido com incontrolável energia a pista de dança da Casa Independente, verdadeira instituição cultural a funcionar no Largo do Intendente, ao serviço de uma nova Lisboa.

A Lisboa que vê nascer estes Fogo Fogo é vibrante e especial: é uma Lisboa onde cabe toda a África, sobretudo a que fala português, tanto a do futuro, como a do passado. Uma Lisboa onde ainda é possível descobrir peças de colecção em vinil dos Tubarões e todas as obscuras pérolas de edição de autor que a diáspora de Cabo Verde gravou nos anos 80 e 90 no estúdio Musicorde de Campo de Ourique e que o mundo nunca ouviu. Essa é a Lisboa que, qual vulcão, expeliu os Fogo Fogo.

Como se começou por explicar, ainda há muitos segredos na música, muitos terrenos por explorar, apesar de haver quem acredite que já tudo está no YouTube. E um desses segredos é o funaná de Cabo Verde, da Ilha de Santiago. A editora Analog Africa, por exemplo, já deu bem conta da mais relevante memória do semba e da rebita de Angola em duas maravilhosas compilações que servem como uma espécie de história ancestral da música de um país que ofereceu o kuduro ao mundo. Agora, começam a aparecer sinais de que o funaná pode ser a próxima explosão das pistas internacionais: os Tubarões a terminarem em apoteose um concerto em Lisboa com um "Djonsinho Cabral" apoteótico; os Ferro Gaita a incendiarem a multidão num grande espectáculo no festival de músicas do mundo de Loulé; e, sobretudo, o regresso de Bitori (secundado por músicos de Bulimundo) aos palcos internacionais por mão de Samy Ben Redjeb da Analog Africa.

Tudo junto, isto significa que Fogo Fogo são uma urgente manifestação de uma cultura que, qual vulcão, está prestes a explodir. Os músicos envolvidos são ultra-experientes, profundos conhecedores dos múltiplos grooves de inspiração africana e atiram-se a funanás e a música de baile de festa africana no B.Leza ou na Voz do Operário como se 1987 tivesse sido anteonte. E neste contexto assumem a mais primordial das missões: fazer dançar sem truques, apenas com energia de bpms carregados, com a bateria e o baixo em permanente derrapagem e os sons inspirados na "gaita" (a concertina) a comandarem a identidade melódica. São cinco os temas neste ep - E Si Propi, Sentimento, Pomba, Cabra Preta e M'Bem Di Fora -, cinco pedaços de lava escaldante, gravados de forma intensa e directa. Os Fogo Fogo podem muito bem ser o acontecimento do ano que ainda ninguém descobriu. Mas depois da erupção, nada vai ficar igual.

It is 1997. A quiet, unassuming man of 59 years old named Victor Tavares - better know as Bitori - walks into a recording studio for the first time. The result is a musical masterpiece - a recording which many consider to be the best Funaná album ever made.

Bitori´s musical adventure had begun long before this point. It was 1954 when he embarked on a journey across the seas to the island of Sao Tomé & Principe. The young man´s hope was to return to Cabo Verde with an accordion. 

Following two years of hard labour Bitori had succeeded in saving enough money to acquire what was to become his most valued possession, his cherished instrument. The two month journey back to Santiago, his island of birth, proved time enough to master it.

Self taught, Bitori developed his own style, an infectious blaze, that quickly caught the attention of the older generation. Before long Bitori was being asked to share his musical talents, igniting the local festivities around Praia with his music.

But not everybody welcomed the rural accordion-based sound. Perceived as a symbol of the struggle for Cape Verdean independence and frowned upon as music of uneducated peasants, Funaná was prohibited by the Portuguese colonial rulers. Performing it in public or in urban centres had serious consequences - often jail time and torture awaited musicians that were “caught in the act”. In light of such persecution the genre of Funaná began to slowly disappear.

In 1975 Cabo Verde achieved independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Along with Cabo Verde’s independence came a lifting of the ban placed on Funaná. The musical repercussions in Cabo Verde were plenty - many upcoming artists embraced Funaná, translating and adapting its musical form in new ways. It was not to be until the mid-1990’s, however, that Funaná in its traditional form was actually recorded.

It was a young singer from Tarafal, Chando Graciosa, who was to play a key role in this event. Upon hearing Bitori, Graciosa immediately felt drawn to Bitori's unique playing style - a raw and passionate sound accompanied by honest lyrics that reflected the harsh reality of the Cabo Verdean working class. He eagerly approached Bitori suggesting they join forces and travel overseas with the objective of taking Funaná beyond its rural roots.

The two of them, with others in tow, achieved their goal and travelled to Europe, introducing a receptive European audience to the vibrant energy of Funaná. Eventually Bitori returned to his beloved Cabo Verde. Graciosa opted to settle in Rotterdam in order to pursue his career - he vowed, however, to bring Bitori across to Holland at a later date to record an album.

In 1997 the time was ripe to immortalise the sound Bitori had shaped over a time span of four decades. Built around a formidable rhythm section, formed of drummer Grace Evora and bass player Danilo Tavares, "Bitori Nha Bibinha" was recorded. The recording catapulted Chando Graciosa to stardom, making him Cabo Verde´s No.1 interpreter of Funaná. The success in Cabo Verde was phenomenal and Funaná rapidly gained the recognition it deserved, especially in urban dance clubs. Bitori´s songs quickly became standards - classics known and loved throughout the country. The musical success, however, was solely limited to the Cabo Verdean islands - until now!

Analog Africa is proud to contribute to the worldwide promotion of Funaná - the once forbidden sound of the Cabo Verde archipelago - by releasing a worldwide re-issue of Bitori and Chando Graciosa´s legendary recording. 

The release will herald Bitori´s first European Tour taking place during the summer of 2016. Watch this space! And listen!
