A peek into the musical mind of ‘o maestro de Cabo Verde’. At age 18, musical prodigy Paulino Vieira spearheaded the new musical movement of Cape Verde (70’s to 90’s). All songs were either written, arranged or recorded in its entirety by Vieira and contain the characteristic Paulino Vieira sound.

Paulino Vieira: Cabo Verde's living legend w/ Wes 281224

Of all contemporary Cape Verdeans, Cesaria Evora, "the Queen of the Morna" made the biggest impression internationally. However the first Cape Verdean to grace the American imagination was the harpooner Dagoo in Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1851). Cape Verdeans first arrived in United States as whalers in the late 1700's and have been coming ever since, bringing a distinctive Portuguese-African Kriolu flavor to communities across Southern New England and beyond. We'll take a step back in time and look at the rich cultural life of Cape Verdean neighborhoods, where great bands played mornas and coladeiras at local social clubs.  Our principle guide for this program will be historian Marilyn Halter, author of “Between Race and Ethnicity: Cape Verdean American Immigrants, 1860-1965.” She'll take us through the years as the Cape Verdean community navigated the turbulent waters of opportunity and identity in America long before the age of American multiculturalism. Then we'll jump ahead and explore current trends from the far-flung Diaspora's thriving music scene, ranging from hip-busting funaná to sleek cabo-zouk. All along, we'll be hearing from Cape Verdean-American musicians, from old-time guitar master Freddy Silva to rapper Mo Green, as they reflect on immigration, nostalgia, heritage, and what it means to be Cape Verdean in the United States.

CelesteMariposa is an unconventional performance built from old Lusophone African pearls inspired on African “Bailes” that joins grooves from all the 5 ex-Portuguese Colonies Angola, Cape Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Mozambique and S. Tomé and Príncipe. Most of the records are almost unheard of in western culture, but were naturally found within Lisbon´s deep African connections.

As in the western world almost exclusive attention is payed to Anglo-Saxon music, The Afro-Baile is a rare celebration of Groove from its cradle: A voyage through time from the bases of instrumental funaná to the rough Angolan Merengue, besides Semba, Gumbé from Guiné-Bissau, Socopé from São Tomé e Principe and Mozambican Marrabenta.

Wes is passionate about sharing the music that moves and comforts him. The warmth and curiosity that exude from his personality are evident in his selections. Though his tastes and interests traverse many genres and styles – from disco and percussive house to Cape Verdean funaná and Brazilian samba –, soulful is the common denominator in all of his sets.

However much he loves to stumble upon exciting current artists, Wes remains most eager to discover tracks from earlier decades, and is passionate about uncovering the stories behind them. His knack for storytelling shines on Joy in the Morning, his monthly Monday morning radio show on Rotterdam’s Operator Radio. His desire to connect people through music is palpable in his and Vasco’s bi-monthly club night Weerd, a staple in Utrecht’s nightlife scene.

Alongside venues in various cities across the Netherlands, his resume includes festivals like Lowlands, Down the Rabbit Hole, Orbit, Drift and Wildeburg. Whether it's on a sweaty dance floor or through the digital airwaves of online radio, Wes' selections will surely lift you up too.
