Whole Life Ahead Of

A few weeks ago a robin kept appearing when i came home, i noticed it had a missing foot. Its beathing was quite laboured, and it was clearly struggling, but managing. I scuffed up the ground for it whenever i got back and it was there, so that it could find grubs and insects in the disturbed earth. I thought it was a male, as i'd heard a singing robin in the hedge close by, but this turned out to be another robin. I never heard the one footed robin sing, so its a she. She very quickly started looking for me and trusting me, enough to take food from my hand. Soon though, other robins learned that i was feeding her, and would appear when i was with her, and she would fly away. Robins are very territorial, and violently aggressive towards one another. She would wait until it was almost dark, when the other robins had gone to roost, then appear at my window, and she would get a last feed in peace before she too went to roost. Sometimes she would just not go, perched in the light from my window as it got darker and darker. You need to go, i'd say. In the end i had to go in and switch off the light, so that she went, somewhere safe. This past week it has become extremely cold, -4 or 5 at night. She had this to contend with, along with being intimidated and chased away by at least another two robins, and her missing foot. Even though i would sit with her and try to shield her from the other robins, they only had to appear and she would fly off, and they would chase her. At mid day two days ago i fed her, she looked very thin, and was breathing very fast. Her one foot clasped my little finger as she fed, then she was gone, another robin after her. She didn't appear that evening, and i've not seen her since. Her struggles are over. Nature is unkind. It broke my heart not seeing her again and wondering about her fate, but she filled many beautiful moments with her closeness and trust. You wonder if you did the right thing. I tried to. I didn't compose this piece for the robin, or intend to call it Robin, but as i played, i think she made it sound the way it does.
